In Chapter 19, Marcus (the narrator) uses several terms and utilizes vocabulary specific to his locale and his niche. For example, the term Xnet refers to the underground networking used by Marcus. The BART is a local acronym referring to Bay Area Rapid Transit, a monorail system in San Francisco. The Vampmob is Marcus's name for a LARP (live-action role play) event that he set up as a distraction in order to sneak out of the city. In addition to these terms and others like it, Cory Doctorow utilizes short and to-the-point sentences in his novel.

Theme in Chapter 19

One of the most prominent themes in chapter 19 is the illusion that someone or something that appears to be good is actually bad. For example, the Department of Homeland Security, a government agency that appears to be good on the surface, have gassed and beaten protestors and tortured people who were in San Francisco at the time of the Bay Bridge bombing. Masha, an undercover DHS agent, seemed to be on Marcus's side. However, her actions, most notably threatening to delete the photo of Darryl with Marcus and Van, made Marcus realize that he needed to stay in San Francisco and fight.
