The novel Sula takes place over the course of 45 years. How do relations between the races change over the course of the novel? How are the inhabitants of the Bottom and Medallion
changed by what's going on in the world around them? Quote or paraphrase text evidence to support your response. (p.3-4 and 163-166)

The relationship between races changed a lot throughout Sula in the beginning it talks about how the bottom was where white sent black people to keep the segregated and isolated “that was the way it started. Not the town, of course, but that part of town where the negroes lived” but by the end we are shown that the whole town is now integrated “you could go downtown and see colored people working in the dime store behind the counters, even handling money with cash register keys around their necks. And a colored man taught mathematics at the junior high school.”

The way how race relations changed through out the book is later in 1965 a lot of black people were able to getting jobs to support them and there family. Pg 163 says “ you could go downtown and see colored people working in the dime store behind counter, and even handling money with cash-register keys”. This is a change because before in the book Sula it talked about how when there was a construction project going on black people weren’t hired to do it because of racism. So for them to start getting these jobs when they weren’t getting them before is showing development in the community.

The inhabitants of the Bottom are changed by the world around them because they are led to believe that they need to change physical features to be accepted in society and led to believe that they live on “the bottom of heaven” but in reality live in the worst part of the mountain with hard farming conditions. “ ‘but when God looks down, it’s the bottom…” (Morrison 5).

Relations between races changes from black people being separated from white people in the worse place to few black left in the now popular “bottom” with mostly white people. The inhabitants are changed after the war because now they want to get as far away from the bottom as possible. “These young ones kept talking about community, but they left the hills to the poor, the old, the stubborn- and the rich white folks.” (Morrison 166)
