Francis Drake is considered the first Englishman to see the Pacific Ocean. He was the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe. Sir Francis Drake was knighted abroad Golden Hind in 1581. He served as mayor of Plymouth and as a Member of Parliament. He delayed the Spanish Armada by a year through a pre-emptive strike.

Drake’s later years were not happy. An expedition that he led to Portugal proved abortive, and his last voyage, in 1596 against the Spanish possessions in the West Indies, was a failure, largely because the fleet was decimated by a fever to which Drake himself succumbed. He was buried at sea off the town of Puerto Bello.

Vasco de Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific Ocean to become the first European to lead an expedition to reach the Pacific Ocean from the New World. Vasco Nunez de Balboa was the first European to see the Pacific Ocean from a peak in Darien, Panama - he had climbed the peak alone. In 1510 Vasco de Balboa, and his dog Leoncico, stowed away on a boat going from Santo Domingo to San Sebastian in Columbia. The expedition travelled further south and in 1511 the captain, Nicuesa, founded the town of Santa Maria which was the first European settlement in South America.

A fellow explorer summoned Vasco home and had him arrested and tried for rebellion and high treason, among other charges. In the highly biased trial that ensued Balboa was found guilty and condemned to death. He was beheaded, along with four alleged accomplices, in 1519.
