Tundra is the coldest of all the biomes. Tundra comes from the Finnish word tunturia, meaning treeless plain. It is noted for its frost-molded landscapes, extremely low temperatures, little precipitation, poor nutrients, and short growing seasons. Dead organic material functions as a nutrient pool. The two major nutrients are nitrogen and phosphorus. Nitrogen is created by biological fixation, and phosphorus is created by precipitation. Tundra is separated into two types: arctic tundra and alpine tundra.

There are eight major terrestrial biomes: tropical rainforests, savannas, subtropical deserts, chaparral, temperate grasslands, temperate forests, boreal forests, and Arctic tundra. Biomes are large-scale environments that are distinguished by characteristic temperature ranges and amounts of precipitation. These variables affect the types of vegetation and animal life that can exist in those areas. Because a biome is defined by climate, the same biome can occur in geographically distinct areas with similar climates

Mongolian-Manchurian grassland.

Extensive grasslands spread inland from northeastern China’s coastal hills toward the boreal forests of southern Siberia. Warm and productive during summer, cold and windblown during winter, this ecoregion supports a diverse grassland community with small populations of wild ungulates such as the Mongolian gazelle. Wildlife persists here despite hunting and the need to coexist with large numbers of domestic sheep and goats. Several species, including Przewalski’s gazelle and Bactrian camel, have been extirpated from the Mongolian-Manchurian Grassland as a result of anthropogenic activity. The only endemic bird, the brown eared-pheasant, uses the grassland and shrub habitat of this ecoregion as winter refuge.

The Sahara is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the western edge, the Atlas Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Red Sea on the east, and the Sudan and the valley of the Niger River on the south. The Sahara is divided into western Sahara, the central Hoggar (Ahaggar) Mountains, the Tibesti Mountains, the Air Mountains, an area of desert mountains and high plateaus, Ténéré desert and the Libyan desert, which is the most arid region. In the north, the Sahara reaches to the Mediterranean Sea in Egypt and portions of Libya. In Cyrenaica and the Maghreb, the Sahara experiences a more Mediterranean climate with a winter rainy season.Major cities located in the Sahara include Cairo, Egypt; Tripoli, Libya; Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania; Tamanrasset, Ouargla, Bechar, Hassi Messaoud, Ghardaia, and El Oued in Algeria; Timbuktu in Mali; Agadez in Niger; and Faya-Largeau in Chad.

Tropical rainforests are home to 80 percent of the world's terrestrial biodiversity, all squeezed into a narrow strip of equatorial land. They are also home to millions of human beings that have been a part of forest ecosystem for thousands of years. While tropical rainforests are perhaps the most iconic, temperate rainforests are equally diverse and beautiful. Together, rainforests offer a gallery of the most beautiful, awe-inspiring places and creatures on Earth.

Terrestrial biome are known for their diversity, they are grouped into large categorie. Grouping these ecosystems into just a few biome categories obscures the great diversity of the individual ecosystems within them. Temperature variation on a daily and seasonal basis is also important for predicting the geographic distribution of the biome and the vegetation type in the biome.
For example Tundra, treeless low (less than 1 m) vegetation with short perennials, water frozen.

187812
The terrestrial biome is a community of plants and animals that have common characteristics for the environment they exist in. They can be found over a range of continents. Biomes are distinct biological communities which have formed in response to a shared physical climate . There are eight major terrestrial biomes: tropical wet forests, savannas, subtropical deserts, chaparral, temperate grasslands, temperate forests, boreal forests, and Arctic tundra. The same biome can occur in different geographic locations with similar climates. Temperature and precipitation, and variations in both, are key abiotic factors that shape the composition of animal and plant communities in terrestrial biomes. Some biomes, such as temperate grasslands and temperate forests, have distinct seasons, with cold weather and hot weather alternating throughout the year. In warm, moist biomes, such as the tropical wet forest, net primary productivity is high, as warm temperatures, abundant water, and a year-round growing season fuel plant growth. Other biomes, such as deserts and tundra, have low primary productivity due to extreme temperatures and a shortage of available water.

Each of the world’s major biomes is distinguished by characteristic temperatures and amounts of precipitation. Some of the major terrestrial biomes in the world is tropical forests, savannas, deserts, temperate grasslands, temperate deciduous forests, Mediterranean scrub, coniferous forests, and tundra. The Arctic tundra is a cold, vast, treeless area of low, swampy plains in the far north around the Arctic Ocean. It includes the northern lands of Europe (Lapland and Scandinavia), Asia (Siberia), and North America (Alaska and Canada), as well as most of Greenland. Another type of tundra is the alpine tundra, which is a biome that exists at the tops of high mountains.

190982
Terrestrial biomes In Cambodia
Cambodia is located in the Tropical Semi-arid biome, and in the Southwest or the Coast of the country, the Tropical Humid biome. The latitude of the country is 11.55° north, so its solar insolation is 98.6%. Cambodia consists of two seasons, the wet season and the dry season. The peak of the wet season starts in the months of July to September, experiencing rainy days, which can last few hours each day. In the months of May through to October, Cambodia experiences southwest monsoons, which takes up about three-quarters of their rainfall.

From March to May is when Cambodia suffers through the most heat. The only precipitation in the country are short periods of rain that occur in the afternoons that occur more frequent and are more intense through those months. River and lake water levels are quite low due to the low and short rainfall, which make it much more difficult for boats and ferries to travel. The temperature slowly begins to rise in the months of February and March, and peaks out in April, before the northeast monsoons begin to arise. April is the worst month for Cambodia because the mid-day temperatures exceed up to the upper 30’s, especially in the more inland areas.

The soil condition make tropical rainforest in Cambodia an ideal environment for bacteria and other
Microorganism to live. They quickly decompose matter on the forest floor. As a result, most of nutrients are contained in the tree and other plants rather than in the soil. Most nutrients that are absorbed into the soil are leach out by the abudant rainfall

Different terrestrial biomes are
usually defined in terms of their plants, such as trees, shrubs, and grasses.
Factors such as latitude, humidity, and elevation affect biome type.

Terrestrial biomes include grasslands, forests, deserts, and tundra.
Grasslands are characterized as lands dominated by grasses rather than
large shrubs or trees and include the savanna and temperate grasslands.
Forests are dominated by trees and other woody vegetation and are classified based on their latitude.
Forests include tropical, temperate, and boreal forests (taiga).
Deserts cover about one fifth of the Earth’s surface and occur where rainfall is less than 50 cm (about 20 inches)
each year. Tundra is the coldest of all the biomes. The tundra is characterized for its frost-molded landscapes,
extremely low temperatures, little precipitation, poor nutrients, and short growing seasons.
There are two main types of tundra, Arctic and Alpine tundras. Terrestrial biomes (Figure below) lying within the Arctic and Antarctic Circles do not have very much plant or animal life.
Biomes with the highest amount of biodiversity, that is the most variation in plant and animal life, are near the equator

One of the terrestrial biomes, taiga, is an evergreen forest of the subarctic, covering extensive areas of northern North America and Eurasia.

The Mediterranean basin is considered a hotspot of biological diversity with a long history of modification of natural ecosystems by human activities, and is one of the regions that will face extensive changes in climate. For 181 terrestrial mammals (68% of all Mediterranean mammals), we used an ensemble forecasting approach to model the future (approx. 2100) potential distribution under climate change considering five climate change model outputs for two climate scenarios. Overall, a substantial number of Mediterranean mammals will be severely threatened by future climate change, particularly endemic species. Moreover, we found important changes in potential species richness owing to climate change. The Mediterranean basin is one of the richest and most complex regions on the Earth from a geological, biological and cultural point of view. Widely considered as one of the global hotspots of biodiversity. the region hosts about 25 000 plant species (50% of which are endemic), more than 150 000 insect species (on average 15–20% of endemics; up to 90% of endemics in cave systems) and more than 1100 terrestrial vertebrates (endemism rates range from 17% for breeding birds up to 64% for amphibians). A number of biogeographic, geological and historical factors contribute to this exceptional biological diversity ,but the tight integration between traditional human activities and Mediterranean ecosystems may lead to coevolution as an additional important driver.

REN CHENXI
ES01724
Terrestrial biomes
Terrestrial biomes are major regions in the Earth that share the same climate despite being in different geographical locations. The Earth has six major land biomes: rainforests, deserts, tundras, grasslands, taiga and temperate deciduous forests. Each biome differs in weather, latitude, topography, relative humidity and amount of sunlight. These climatic regions are determined mainly by rainfall and temperature and are distinguished by their predominant plants and animal communities.
Each biome has a unique set of flora and fauna that adapt and interact naturally to obtain natural resources and survive in the environment. Plants in the desert have adapted to the lack of water and extreme aridity by storing water in their stems and by shedding their leaves or becoming dormant during dry seasons. Savannahs or tropical grasslands, which are prone to wildfires, are home to animals with long and strong legs that enable them to outrun the fire.
Most trees in temperate deciduous rainforests lose their leaves to preserve water during winter, while a wide range of animals and plants thrive in tropical rainforests. Taiga or coniferous forest is home to drought-tolerant, evergreen and needle-shaped trees. The thin, cone-shaped branches of the trees help shed snow during the region's long winter to prevent being broken. Grasses, small woody shrubs, lichens and mosses are the only plant species that can be found on tundra, the coldest region in the world.
Ecological Regions Of Malaysia
From peninsular mountains to low-lying islands and out to the sea, Malaysia is mostly covered in forests and wetlands. It lies in Southeast Asia and borders Thailand, Brunei, and Indonesia. The country also shares maritime borders with Singapore, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Malaysia is comprised of East Malaysia and Peninsular Malaysia. The state's lowest point is the South China Sea (0m) and Mt. Kinabalu, at 4,100 meters, is the highest point.
Borneo Lowland Rain Forest
This terrestrial ecoregion is classified in the tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests biome. The ecoregion lies in the lowland regions of Borneo Island. The region’s climate is tropical, and monthly rainfall exceeds 8 inches in a given year. The ecoregion’s geology comprises of sedimentary and volcanic rocks, and limestones.
Dipterocarps are the dominant tree species, forming canopies of between 24 to 36 meters high. Other tree families include Euphorbiaceae, Lauraceae, and Annonaceae. The trees support an undergrowth of orchids, herbs, ferns, and palms. The region is home to endemic bats and rodents as well as the clouded leopard, Asian elephant, sun bear, Bornean orangutan, Bornean white-bearded gibbon, Sumatran rhinoceros, and 13 primate species. Threats to this ecoregion are logging, agricultural development, and fires. Conservation areas in the region include Tabin Wildlife Reserve and Kayan Mentarang National Park.
Borneo Montane Rain Forests
The Borneo montane rain forests are a terrestrial ecoregion classified in the tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests biome. The ecoregion comprises of montane forests located in the central part of Borneo Island. Precipitation recorded is more than that of the lowlands, and the region’s geology is of melange and old volcanic rocks.
The dominant trees are oaks and chestnut alongside Myrtaceae, Ericaceae, Podocarpaceae, and Fagaceae families. The canopies support more epiphytes than the lowland including lichen, orchids, and ferns. The region supports large populations of small mammals such as rats, civets, shrews, and squirrels. Larger mammals roaming the forests are macaque monkey species, orangutan, langurs, and the Sumatran rhinoceros. The location of the ecoregion renders it inaccessible and largely undisturbed. Significant parts of the region lie in the Danum Valley Conservation Area and Kayan Mentarang National Park.
Greater Sundas Mangroves
The Greater Sundas Mangroves ecoregion occupies the coastlines of Borneo, Sumatra, and Java Islands in Malaysia and Indonesia. Vegetation along the mangrove ranges from Nipa palms, Rhizophoras, Avicennia, Bruguieras, and Sonneratia. Notable fauna includes the proboscis monkey, saltwater crocodile, common redshank, Stork-billed kingfisher, and Irrawaddy dolphin. Among the threats to this ecoregion are poaching, agricultural expansion, urban development, and logging. The Bako National Park protects large tracts of the mangrove ecoregion.
Peninsular Malaysian Peat Swamp Forests
This terrestrial ecoregion is classified under the tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests biome. The region is located in the western and eastern parts of the Malay Peninsula. The region does not support abundant life since the peat swamps are acidic and the soils are infertile. The dominant trees are strangler firs and dipterocarps, which support an undergrowth of sealingwax palm and pandan. The region supports populations of the clouded leopard, tiger, Sumatran rhinoceros, Asian elephant, and Malayan tapir. The ecoregion is threatened by agricultural development, deforestation, fires, and mining. The area remains largely unprotected.
Other Ecological Regions of Malaysia
Marine ecoregions in Malaysia are the Andaman Sea, Sulu Sea, and Sulawesi sea. These ecoregions are threatened by pollution caused by various coastal activities and oil spills, as well as by coastal development. Other ecoregions of Malaysia are Kayah-Karen and Tenasserim Moist Forests; Kinabalu Montane Scrub; Peninsular Malaysian Lowland and Mountain Forests; Peninsular Malaysian montane rain forests; Peninsular Malaysian rain forests, and Sundaland Rivers and Swamps.
