분명히 머릿속은 이 생각이었는데 어느새 차를 타고 시골 한가운데에 있는 학교로 가고 있었다. 이제 집에 가기는커녕 한 달 동안 기숙사 학교에만 박혀있을 신세가 되었다. 이게 다 망할 지아 때문이다. 학원을 안 다녀도 된다는 지아의 말만 믿고 평소에 안 하던 공부도 하고, 면접 준비까지 해서 겨우 이 학교에 합격했는데 기숙사 학교라니.

지아는 이미 학교에 갈 모든 준비를 다 한 것 같았다. 복장도 단정했고, 가방도 멨다. 아직도 고양이 털이 묻은 셔츠를 입고 머리도 일주일째 안 감은 나와는 너무 달랐다. 하긴, 지아는 정말로 기숙사에서 친구들과 함께하고 열심히 공부할 생각이 넘쳐나니까. 공부, 친구 모두 관심 없고 그냥 집이 좋은 나와는 정반대이다. 지아가 차 문을 열고 나가려 하자 나도 교복으로 허둥지둥 갈아입고 가방을 대충 멘 다음 엄마 차에서 내렸다.

교문까지 걸어가는 내내 지아는 활짝 웃으면서 나에게 말을 걸었다.

“학교 생활, 진짜 좋을 것 같지 않아?”

“그건 모르겠고 아직 중학생인데 무슨 기숙사야.”

“우리가 초등학생은 아니잖아? 어! 저기 봐봐! 학교 엄청 크다! 입학식 늦겠다. 가자!”

그렇게 나는 지아에게 교문 앞까지 끌려갔다. 학교 주변에는 큰 건물 하나도 보이지 않았다. 편의점도, 패스트푸드 음식점도, 그냥 아무것도 없는 시골이었다. 여기서 3년 동안 어떻게 살아갈지 벌써부터 걱정이 되었다. 대체 내가 왜 속았을까.

사건의 시작은 작년 5월이었다. 그때까지만 해도 난 평범하게 잘 살고 있었다. 학교랑 학원이 있다는 것 빼고는. 예전부터 내 유일한 안식처는 집이었고, 그때까지도 나는 내가 가장 좋아하는 활동, 즉 침대에 누워 고양이를 쓰다듬으면서 휴대폰 보기를 할 수 있었다. 그날 나는 학원을 마치고 거실 쇼파에서 꿀잠을 자고 있었다. 현관문 소리가 들리기 전까지는. 그날도 지아는 늦은 시간까지 친구들과 놀고 온 것이다.

"아니, 지금까지 놀다가 온 거야?"

"별로 늦지도 않았는데. 고.작. 열한 시야. 왜, 잠 깨서 킹받나 보지?"

지아는 늦게 들어오는 시간이 많았기 때문에 주먹으로 콱 때려버리고 싶을 때도 많았지만, 이제쯤 적응되었다. 그냥 여기서 대화를 끝내려고 했다. 그런데 그때, 내 운명을 바꿔버릴 한 마디를 지아가 했다.

"맞다, 너 학원 가는 거 싫어하잖아. 요즘에 '사교육 없는 학교'라고 있거든? 그런 데 가면 자기주도학습 시키려고 학원 안 보낸대."

그 외에도 입시가 어찌구 공부가 어찌구 했지만 그건 안 들렸다. 중요한 건 공부만 잘 해서 좋은 학교 들어가면 학원에 안 가도 된다는 것. 그때부터 공부에 목적이 생겼고 더 열심히 하게 되었다. 물론 나 같은 놈이 열심히 한다는 거야 수업 집중해서 듣는 거랑, 실제로 학원 숙제를 한다는 것 밖에 없지만. 그렇게 어떻게든 세계중학교란 곳에 합격하게 되었다. 하지만 최종 전형인 면접을 마치고 집으로 돌아가는 길에, 문득 생각이 들었다.

'왜 이렇게 가는 데 시간이 오래 걸리는 거지?'

시간이 그냥 길게 느껴지는 줄 알았는데, 알고 보니 차로 무려 한 시간이 넘게 걸린 거였다. 생각해 보니 내가 학원을 안 가도 된다는 생각에 망상과 공부만 했지, 학교를 알아보지는 않았다. 그래서 지아에게 물어봤다.

"근데 이렇게 멀면 학교는 어떻게 가는 거냐?"

"야, 당연히 기숙사가 있지."

그때 내가 망함을 직감했다. 하지만 면접을 어떤 이유로 결국 통과해버렸고, 지아와 부모님의 강요로 세계중에 입학하게 되었다.

한마디로 망했다.

입학식이 끝나고 교실로 갔다. 담임은 국어 선생님이었는데 첫인상부터 평범한 사람 같진 않았다. 평범한 선생님은 짝짝이 양말에다 라면 국물이 묻은 셔츠, 부스스한 머리를 가지고 오지 않는다. 다만 이 국어 선생님은 이 모든 것을 갖고 있었다. 덜렁이인가 싶으면서도 뭔가 동질감이 느껴졌다. 이 쌤도 나처럼 집에 가고 싶어할까?

어색한 인사에 아이들은 물음표 가득한 눈으로 선생님을 쳐다보았다. 몇몇 아이들은 "진짜 선생님 맞아?" "이름이 임금님이라고?" 하며 웅성댔다. 선생님은 시선을 의식하며 애써 웃음을 지었다.

"하하, 첫 소개가 좀 어색했네. 자기소개를 무려 30년 동안이나 하고 다님에도 불구하고 난 항상 왜 이럴까. 이름 임금님 맞아. 우리 아빠가 장난으로 지어준 이름이야. 사실 임금님은 장난이고 부모님이 지어준 진짜 이름은 따로 있었는데, 그냥 임금님이 더 재밌어서 개명했어. 그리고 기억에 더 잘 남잖아."

march 2nd, 2029 was another start of a school year. new humans, known as the seventh graders, were coming as always, a bit excited about their new life in a new school. of course, kijetesantakalu Ila knew that after a week, their excitement would cease to exist and turn back into their regular selves from their former school. the others who weren't new to the school didn't have as much enthusiasm, though some were as excited as the new kids, others were dragging their suitcases mindlessly, thinking about the school year they'd have to suffer through. kijetesantakalu Ila decided to visit the auditorium just to enjoy the new kids' enthusiasm, and feel joy as their enthusiasm would wither down through the semester.

a kid who identified with the name soweli Jona was among the new students. soweli Jona, as you could guess, was a tokiponist, who liked to write meaningless but funny short stories about random things in her life and worldbuild ma pona. however, soweli Jona never revealed this side of her. to other people, soweli Jona was known as 김소연 or Alice. She was the top student in Halfrock Elementary School, and also the private tutor for her friend 연수아, which she actually got money from. 연수아, or Lily, wasn't the best friend soweli Jona could have, but Lily was rich. That was the only reason soweli Jona could be in this very place, MPoly International School, which cost a whole lot, and was definitely not something her family could afford. soweli Jona was here using her own money from teaching Lily, and also a lot more money from Lily's family, for the cost of teaching and helping Lily at all times. Personally, soweli Jona thought Lily was a big dumdum and had a trash personality. But she couldn't say that out loud for obvious reasons. soweli Jona was the only person in the family that had much talent as her, and the only person who had a chance to actually get a good education and a high-paying job.

kijetesantakalu Ila watched the students for hours as the new kids went through the entrance ceremony. It was more boring than she expected, so she was half daydreaming about her story, until the kid who was supposed to represent the new students came up and said a speech. Usually, that was the most boring part of the ceremony, but this time it wasn't, because the speech went something like this:

kijetesantakalu started giggling, until she realized it was her first draft of the first page of her story. did the speech get mixed up with her story? how? before she could think, one of the new kids in the crowd screamed.

"NO LILY THAT'S NOT THE SPEECH!"

the student giving the speech, who seemed to be Lily, stopped for a moment, looked at the next page, and started to read it.

"we're no strangers to love. you know the rules, and so do i."

the crowd burst into laughter. kijetesantakalu Ila realized that while writing her first draft of her story, she wrote the lyrics of "never gonna give you up" on the paper. how weird.

after Lily read the whole lyrics of "never gonna give you up", the principal tried to calm the kids down and end the ceremony in the most normal way possible. even though the ceremony did go on, the students were still laughing, the kid who screamed to Lily looked extremely frustrated, furious, embarrassed, and worried at the same time, and Lily was frozen after she realized what she had just done. the students went to the main building to meet their homeroom teachers, and came to their dorm rooms after that, where kijetesantakalu Ila was thinking about how in the world her story's first draft could get mixed up with the entrance ceremony speech.

soweli Jona rushed into her dorm room, which was room 301. before Lily, who would be in the same room, could come, she quickly got into a secret space she found the day before. her face was red thinking about how she could have messed up this bad. yesterday was when she first got into her dorm room and found this space. she found some fascinating documents which she read at night, when Lily was sleeping and therefore didn't need help from her. after reading it, soweli Jona must have accidentally put it beside Lily's files, which Lily must have mistaken it for her speech. she started regretting not being careful enough, when she saw a raccoon dog pop out. soweli Jona, as a tokiponist, instinctively thought of the word "kijetesantakalu" and said,

"tan seme la kijetesantakalu li lon a?!" (why is a kijetesantakalu here?)

kijetesantakalu Ila turned around and noticed soweli Jona's existence. kijetesantakalu Ila knew toki pona, since it was a gift given to every kijetesantakalu with human intelligence. so she responded in toki pona.

"a, sina sona e toki pona anu seme? nasa a." (oh, you know toki pona? that's weird.)

of course, soweli Jona didn't know that kijetesantakalu could talk, which caused her to be very, very surprised. however, she could respond.

"seme? MI sona e toki pona la ni li nasa anu seme? SINA la, seme? kijetesantakalu pi mute mute a li sona ala e toki pona. SINA nasa a." (what? if I know toki pona that's weird? what about YOU? many kijetesantakalu don't know toki pona. YOU're the weird one.)

soweli Jona still had trouble believing this was true. if this was, this whole thing was pretty cool. in fact, it would be the best experience she would have in her life. if it wasn't real, that wouldn't matter. so, she continued speaking.

our team agrees with the harms pro team has said. consumer fireworks can be used by uneducated people who are not careful enough, causing accidents from hurting a few people to even huge forest fires. terrorists can easily get fireworks and make bombs. however, the problem isn't all consumers: it's consumers that are not suited for fireworks.

our team believes consumer fireworks have their own good things, and if we ban them, we are taking away all of them. instead, national and local governments should make a law to prevent uneducated people from using fireworks.

this law will ban children under age 14 to use sparklers, and require a license for each smaller fireworks like roman candles or fountains, and bigger aerial fireworks. to get this license, one will have to be at least 18 and have no crime records, and will have to go through safety training of 6 months.

firework users without a license will be fined up to $1000 or spend up to 2 years in jail or juvenile detention center. parents giving kids under 14 any type of fireworks will also be fined or put in jail. someone who sold fireworks to people without a license will also be punished with up to a $2000 fine, jail time or business suspension.
