4th Grade Social Studies how scarcity led to the creation of a sport

Prompt:

Create a storybook for 4th graders in Forsyth County, NC, about the rise of NASCAR, using a Claymation art style. The story must teach the NC Social Studies standard 4.E.1.1 (scarcity impacts economic decisions) and touch on 4.G.1.2 (Exemplify the ways in which movement of people, goods and ideas has impacted the development of North Carolina using maps and other geographic tools.) Include a map of the Tail of the Dragon front facing on the page for students to be able to see how curvy and dangerous the roads are. Do not include characters on this page in the image.

Include a Scots-Irish descendant character named Boone, who explains the history of alcohol production in the mountain region, noting that it only became "moonshine" and the activity became "bootlegging" after the government outlawed it. Define the term bootleggers and moonshine for students (ELL students). Emphasize that these individuals chose the risk of illegal activity because scarcity meant their families relied on the money/income (define income) for necessities like food. Also, show how the drivers learned to drive fast on dangerous, curvy roads (like the Tail of the Dragon) to evade law officers, which eventually turned into competitive racing fueled by bragging. Emphasize the bootleggers modified their cars to evade the law to keep from being arrested to support their families. Include that NASCAR grew as a sport in popularity and is now a large part of NC culture.
