They then plan their goals and begin organizing their thoughts and ideas.

Personal Experience-I can come up ideas relatively easily, but struggle sometimes with the organization in my head.

Observation-I have many students that just do not know where to begin when writing and this can shut them down from writing completely.

Definition-Students put pen to paper and begin organizing their ideas. They check their progress and reread what they have written.

Personal Experience-This is where something that has made sense in my head doesn't always translate seamlessly in my writing.

Observation-This is where some students get frustrated in their attempt to effectively communicate their ideas. Their writing does not say what they want it to say.

Definition-Students refine their message as they reread, self-question, and evaluate what they have written.

Personal Experience-Through this strategy I am able to clarify my message and by reading it out loud I can catch anything that does not make sense. It is the point where I ensure my writing says what I want it to say.

Observation-This is a step in the writing process that my students don't like to revisit what they have written. They know what they want to say and have difficulties getting their writing to say it.

Definition-Students use proofreading to put a critical eye on grammar, punctuation, and spelling. It is the final step to catch any errors.

Personal Experience-With editing software, this step has become dramatically easier and there is really no excuse for writing mistakes. The one caveat is that I still need to reread and not rely solely on software as there are tenses errors and words that are improperly used although not misspelled.

Observation-I have students that skip this step altogether and do not run any kind of spellchecker even though it is very easy.

Definition-Students select the format and the layout for their writing. It is time to present to their audience.

Personal Experience-It is important that the presentation of my writing reflects the message I am trying to get across. I sometimes become so lost in searching for the right format that it just ends up wasting too much time.

Observations-I have students who don't spend any time on the presentation aspect of their writing. They are just so relieved to get to the end.
