as part of a class activity we created our own paper Sculptures inspired by the work of Richard Sweeney Who creates sculpture from paper that Conveys movement through Folds & pleats. I tried my best to take an abstract approach but Found it quite difficult to create motion from a Sheet of paper
We also made a list of synonyms of the word revolve to help us generate more ideas stemming from this interpretation of revolution.

I used myself as the subject of the posters and added a hippy font by removing the background from the text and adding it as another layer.Overall I was very happy with these outcomes.i think I replicated the psychadelic style well whilst incorporating my own style.i think the responses with brighter colors worked the best to suit the vibrancy of his work.i found it difficult with so many layers to make sure the elements were visible .

These ones experimented with the blend tool to create color ombre effects and creating multiple versions of a shape inside a shape aswel as 3d effects.the top left piece was my favourite as i felt it was the most visually interesting..I tried to keep a retro feel in my colors and motifs I found the session beneficial as it gave me a better insight into how illustrator works

I was interested this week at looking at punk going off of my interest in youth subcultures.i felt punk was an interesting area to explore in protest and political art due to their anti establishment viewpoint.the punk music scene appeared around the early 70s in NYC and London whilst the style was driven by vivienne westwood and the sex pistols.i found it interesting that whilst anti establishment many punks had no fixed place on the political spectrum.punk was at its heart a rebellion rejecting social norms of gender ,fashion,music,art and beliefs concerned with individual freedom and non conformity

Throughout the week I became more interested in the idea of specifically looking at feminism movements within punk as the more i looked into the subculture and mivement the more i realised that whilst it was an outsider movement focused on individualism its focus on male agression still failed to be fully inclusive of female punks .i decided to research the work of the guerilla girls an all female collective of women artists who create protest art in the form of posters prints and actions in order to expose sexism and racism in the art world .their most well known piece was do women have to be naked to get into the met museum ?

I was very drawn to the bold monochromatic graphic style of their work.my favourite piece was dear art collectors with its pink paper and handwritten style .I felt this use of girly tropes to enhance the sarcasm of the message would work well for the theme.pf feminism in punk and riot grrl as a movement that aimed to reclaim girlhood so I made my own version of this letter addressing it to an anonymous music listener expressing the message that rock /punk music by men is more popular and listened to than rock music by women.This is an artist that I feel I will return to later on in the project as the style and history is something that links very well to my theme and the era I want to explore

I also looked at the work of jamie reid as another protest artist and a prominent figuire in the punk movement due to his work with the sex pistols for their album covers.His anti establishment designs have been controversial times particularly his god save the Queen piece wich almost wasn't printed .his ransom note style is something I have used many times previously in my.own work so it felt fitting to use him in this project .whilst I like the vibrancy and boldness of his work with the sex pistols I found some of of his earlier collage work quite interesting.i aim to create a response to his work next week either an album cover or a poster with lino or printed images

After exploring alternative interpretations of revolution including movement and politics I feel the protest / political path is the one I want to go down exploring riot grrl as my theme as a feminist movement led by female punk rock artists such as bikini kill who wanted to create a space of self expression and agression for women that wasnt offered to them through the punk subculture .I feel this will be an interesting exploration of revolution as a smaller but important female led movement inside the larger punk culture.

I wanted to research the fashion of riot grrl primarily as whilst riot grrl wasn't concerned with what you chose to wear and was against mainstream standards of beauty many riot grrls sought to use fahsion the same as they used their music to make a statement and get their message across.whilst early female punk played with masculine elements to challenge gender 90s riot grrl often played with stereotypically girly traits as a way to redefine and reclaim girlhood.looking at how riot grrls played with things like contrast ,girly tropes ,the idea of gender and shock to express their messages through their clothing made me think about how I could also incorporate these elements to do the same through my artwork.

I cane across the work of zoe buckman through an article about her every curve exhibition.she is a feminist activist who created this body of work wich displayed hanging vintage lingerie with hip hop lyrics wich reference woman hand embroidered onto them.this explored the contradict between her interests growing up in a community where hip hop was influential but in a feminist household.the differences in the design of the lingerie pieces also represent how ideas of objectification changed over the years

for my response to zoe buckman i wanted to imitate the look of her work using different materials so i used images of kinder whore style babydoll dresses and sewed onto acetate on top to give the appearance that it was sewn into the clothing.The text i used was a quote from Kathleen hanna.When asked why she wanted to write whilst she was doing spoken poetry she replied 'nobody has ever listened to me my whole life and i have all this stuff i want to say' this was when she was told to start a band.i think these responses are very effective and how i adapted to suit my materials.i also like how the red thread almost gives the appearance -a suggestion of how much damage can be done to a woman or girl who is not given a voice .

i came across Jolie ruins work through her pinterest account and etsy store .She creates collages that pairs images from vintage magazines with glitter ,beads magazine letters and straight to the point messages.Having experienced this era first hand she has been creating art ,zines and tshirts for 20 years and as a latina is concerned about representing people of color in her work alongside feminist issues.As someone who has an interest in mixed media i was drawn to the visual pairing of vintage images and sickly sweet color schemes.

in response to jolie ruin i created two collages using printed images and magazine clippings,magazine letters,beads and glitter.As her style is very unique and reliant to her materials,vintage magazines and found objects it was difficult to replicate however printing a vintage image for the centre definitely helped.This one was my favourite response i used images that had a vintage feelwith pearls and glitter and added the text 'she wanted to start a riot (but) for the meantime she smiled' This helped give a new meaning to the image.

the second response used only magazine images instead of printed images so has a more modern feel ,i used more childish beads in this one to create that sickly sweetness and added the line 'don't need a pity party' to suggest how as a feminist movement riot girl didn't promote wallowing in self pity but actively standing up and doing something productive ,shouting their messages and creating a community

i had one more image i had printed for my zoe buckman response so i decided to experiment with it a different way adding pen and smudged pastel directly on-top of it to create a contrast between restriction and beauty and chaos and freedom.the text explores the idea of anger being associated with masculinity and questioning why that is when its just a human emotion/response, a human right to express.

i edited one of my reference images i took for the fashion of riot girl using an editing app adding a vintage color correction ,a grain and some text.I wanted the image to feel quite feminine to contrast the message and almost as a way to make people look and read it. To add a more retro feel i added to brown card,tore the edges and added lipstick marks to add to this hyper feminine but objectifying feel.

Adding to lino with letter stamps

As I felt I hadn't explored enough with typography I went back to my lino and added to it a courtney love quote using letter stamps I felt mimicked the ransom note style of punk art.i like this experiment but my favourite is the one with the organza and embroidery as I feel the layering is effective and adds meaning to my girl lino.

Inspired by my research into not bad for a girl I wanted to create my own documentary trailer or short film aiming to recreate the visuals of the documentary .I alternated between video footage and performance photography adding faded film filters aswell as black and white and vhs effects.i used the song rebel girl by bikini kill alongside the video as the song is one of the most known from the riot grrl movement .I was really happy with the outcome of the video whilst it was only short I felt it was effective particularly with the song choice.it was nice to create a very visual portrayal of the era even I'm modern day

i began looking at final piece ideas .Whilst i liked my zine idea i didnt know if this direction was too obvious and needed to think about the content of this zine and how exactly it could be created.I took main inspiration from skurt Cobain a fairly modern zine that aims to look back on the 90s with nostalgia.This showed me that creating 90s nostalgia is possible in modern day and i could do the same with my own final piece.My second idea looked at working on a larger scale

As i had used my band photography quite a lot throughout my experimentation i felt it was important to create new photos for my final piece.As these were for an album cover they needed to be more posed /staged than my previous photography.However i still wanted to maintain that authenticity so i felt taking the photos in an outdoor location would work well.I really like these photos as i feel i was able to capture the essence of 90s punk and grunge with an added element of femininity

These are the physical collages which form the basis of my album cover.I wanted to explore different paper types and different approaches cutting around photos, working around the photo itself ,incorporating torn paper, stickers ,tape and post its.The collage i feel was most effective is the top one.I think the composition is clear and easy to follow whilst the color scheme feels feminine but impactfull.

these were alternative designs for the poster.the first one is the original which i decided to create monotone as it felt too busy paired with the cover designs.I liked the design in multiple pink shades but didn't want to just use pink in the piece.I ultimately decided on the grey scale poster as i felt there was too much contrast on the black and white wihch was solved using grey

I wanted to try making my own stickers to decorate the outside if the record player as a way to incorporate some of the art o created throughout my sketchbook experimentation.i created these on ibis paint layering my art on different backgrounds adding glitter and cropping them into circular vinyl stickers.these don't look as professional as the album covers but I like the DIY aspect the designs have.i need to find a way to turn them into stickers such as printing them on sticky plastic.

for the final covers i added to them digitally for the pink cover i didn't want to add to much to it so i focused on the back of the record adding text for the track list ,producer and writer credits ,the band name and the copyright details aswell as a barcode and riot grrl fist symbol for the record company.For the top one i altered the brightness and added a grain before adding the band name and single name. I created the back of the vinyl almost completely digitally adding instax images ,lined paper and masking tape .For the black and white record i extracted a line drawing and turned it transparent to layer one of my images in black and white behind and then added magazine letters .For the typography i kept to using magazine letters and cursive handwriting as fonts often used in riot grrl and punk art.

to keep my vinyl records as authentic as possible i created designs for the middle sticker on the vinyl for the a side and b side with dates titles and copyright info.i wanted these to be simple and effective so used objects on white for most of them.I also created added extras for the records.A black and white fold out poster of myself, a design for an inner sleeve using my previous photography with a double exposure effect and green gradient and i also turned my heart riot grrl motif into a set of stickers that could be stuck on notebooks ,water-bottles etc..as a way to grow the riot grrl community.For these designs i used ibis paint

This is my final outcome a record player set up and 3 handmade vinyl singles .overall I'm very happy with my outcome I feel it captures the essence of riot girl well with my choice of collage and mixed media incorporating the diy aspect of the movement and by using strong visual elements I hope the piece captures the strong presence of riot grrl and the woman who were involved in it whilst also expressing the importance of music during this revolution as an outlet
