Neal
Jane wouldn't beg for food because she still hold dignity and certain values. She still has some principles even though she had no money, just the things in her bag.

Thomas
I think that society and the people of the town are mistrustful, rejecting Jane, they are cynical of Jane as a stranger, wasn't very friendly to her. Society was also very poor, so I think that everyone had this "everything for themselves" mindset.

Kathy
I guess the porridge symbolized that someone still cared about strangers.

Janice
After Jane left Thornfield, she pass through a village, then she goes to a Moor House. At the end of her journey, she finally gets taken in by a family and receives help.

Kathy
Jane was provided with a sense of security and respect from St. John and Mary Rivers, she found her family and felt like she belong there instead of how she didn't belong with Mrs. Reed.

Thomas
I feel like Jane's feeling towards Rochester was just friendly and caring, she still cares about what is his current state, whether if Rochester is doing well.

Kathy
I think that Jane viewed nature as one of her biggest challenge to overcome, she was constantly being rained upon, and the harsh conditions was really a challenge to her.

Neal
I think Jane takes offense to Hannah suggesting that if Jane was begging at pervious towns. I think it also had to do with how Jane wasn't begging instead she was trading stuff, she still had principles and values, and she wasn't happy when someone offended her values and assumed that she was a beggar.

Thomas
I think St. John and Rochester are a mirror opposite of each other. St. John is controlling Jane and restricting her, whereas Rochester isn't. Rochester doesn't reason with religion, whereas St. John does.

Kathy
I think Jane made a right decision to leave Thornfield with some regret, she is leaving her first love, but what matter to her the most is that she needs her independence to develop and mature as a person. It's the right choice and it wasn't easy to make.

Neal
I think St. John asked Jane's hand in marriage because at that time it didn't seem to be wrong or unorthodox.

Neal
Hamlet is a small village.

Socratic Seminar Chp. 28-34

Kathy - What did Marsh End and Morton provide for Jane?
It gave Jane a new start and perspective about herself and she also learns that Diana, Mary, and St. John were her cousins. When she first met them, she shared a lot of traits and got along rather well with them. At Morton, Jane was able to bond with more people and the children as well opening herself up.

Neil - Why did Jane cover herself up with her alias "Jane Elliot"
Jane didn't want her recent past and identity to be out in the open. She wanted to observe and become more situated before opening up. Her journey from Thornfield represented a new start for her and a chance for her to reflect on herself and rebuild.

Thomas - Jane has a dream about Rochester one night and what does this say about her feelings even though she left?
She still has feelings for Rochester and she left to embark on her own journey to find herself because she didn't believe that accepting the marriage with him while his actual wife was still there was a good idea at the moment. Mr. Rochester left a very large impression on Jane and she isn't able to forget him that easily.

Neil - What was the view on age gap marriage back in the Victorian Era? (Jane 19 and Rochester 40(ish))
I think back in the Victorian Era, age didn't matter as much as it does today since back then, it was more for status and wealth to see if both sides can benefit from the marriage. Usually, women would also be married off early as well.

I think Jane felt that it was unfair for her to transfer from such a low level and miraculously gain 20,000 pounds from her deceased Uncle. It kind of went against her values. Also, since she just found out that she had living relatives, she was more than happy to share it with them.

Neil - Why does Jane take so much offense from Hannah's suggestion?
Hannah explained how she didn't trust Jane at first because of the state she was in. However, Jane takes offense to the fact that Hannah was so quick to judge her and reject her.

St. John, on his journey as a missionary for God, sees a wife more as a useful tool instead of a lover. He plays as a contrast to Mr. Rochester as Kathy said, fire and ice.

Kathy - Does Jane regret leaving Thornfield?
Throughout her experience after leaving Thornfield, she had some doubts about her choice, but in the end firmly believed that it was necessary for her to find her identity and self-worth. She sensed that if she had married Rochester, she would be in a state of inequality.

Janice - Did Jane's perspective of wealthy and poverty change from the beginning of the story.
She was able to experience wealth and poverty first hand and it didn't really change the values she had beforehand. Splitting the 20,000 pounds between her cousins was supported by the values she had.

Neil - Why does St. John not see it unfaithful to his religion to ask Jane for her hand in marriage?
St. John sees Jane as an adopted sibling instead of an actual sibling. Thus, he pushed for her hand in marriage and she was also the best fit for his job as a missionary's wife. Even though Jane agrees to go to India, St. John sees her rejection to marriage as unfaithful for some reason. St. John sees marriage as more of a tool to help with his journey as a missionary instead of Rochester's view that marriage is a mutual bond between the 2 partners.

Neil - What is a hamlet?
It's pretty much a small village.
