Once Jeannette moves out on her own she discovers she enjoys having order in her life. This can be seen when she says "My life with Eric was calm and predictable. I liked it that way." Jeannette's life was always chaotic, she could never catch a break from burning herself to moving all of a sudden in the middle of the night. Once Jeannette found herself with an orderly life, she knew that it was exactly what she liked. In reality, he never made any advances because he was always drinking and never caring for his family. Jeannette recounts "He explained that he was going to hire a truck to cart the garbage to the dump all at once. But he never got around to that, either, and as Brian and I watched, the hole for the Glass Castle's foundation slowly filled with garbage." Jeannette and Brian held hope for the glass castle that would one day be built however this was only a fantasy that they had, the reality was that Rex would never allow that because he was always making empty promises. I had seen a help-wanted sign in the window of a jewelry store on McDowell Street called Becker's Jewel Box." The main reason that Jeannette wanted to get a job was because the money that they had wasn't enough to keep her family stable while her mom was away. Although Jeannette was only thirteen years old she was already aware of the struggles her family faced and tried her best to help her family, mainly her siblings. Jeannette still loves her dad after everything that he put her through and she just wanted to hold him one last time. Jeanette instantly knew that her dad stole the money however a part of her didn't want to believe that her dad could take part in a malicious act. Growing up Jeannette wished to get out of Welch because she can't deal with her dad's antics and her mom's lack of parenting. In the last moment with her father, Rex looks at her and says "He winked and pointed his finger at me. "Have I ever let you down?" He started chuckling because he knew there was only one way I could answer that question. I just smiled. And then I closed the door." This quote displays how both Rex and Jeannette have accepted each other. Rex knows what her answer to his question would be and Jeannette smiles at him and leaves. After everything, Jeannette came to terms with the type of person her dad was.
