I went into the IAT with 100% confidence of what the results would be. As a person who is actively anti-racist, I was certain that the IAT would confirm my position. So it was very humbling for me to receive the results that I engage in racial based profiling. At first I wanted to dismiss the results, obviously the test was flawed or my approach to it was wrong. Then I just sat with it, and reflected on the results. The results made me realize something very important about myself and inspired me to be more actively anti-racist, to confront my own sense of guilt, and to use my position of privilege to give the podium to people of color. Mostly, what I took away from the test was how little I know, how much I have to learn, and to be quiet and listen.

I went in thinking that I was going to some level of automatic preference, like a slight preference. What really surprised me was that I got a strong automatic preference. That is kinda concerning because I thought I was more aware of it than I actually was. I don't want to treat my students of color in a way that will take away from their education. Everyone deserves an education.

The other IAT I took was with gender and careers. I assumed that I was going to associated male with careers. But I ended up getting a slight association with females and careers and males with families. I did not think I would get that. I thought I would get female with family and male with careers.

I was familiar with IATs and had done them in the past, but had never done this specific race one. I ended up doing the test twice because I did not get results the first time, but my results the second time showed me as having a moderate association between Black individuals and negative thoughts. This is clearly not where I want to be, but knowing that is helpful. I did quite a few others as well, and was sometimes surprised in other ways. I am a religious person and took a religious test thinking that I would probably show bias, as I am part of a specific religion. Instead, I showed no bias on that specific test. This makes me wonder if it is possible to be openly biased while not being unconsciously biased, and vice versa. No matter what, this information is good to have and consider. All of us have these negative biases that must be acknowledged to be combated.

I wasn't sure what I'd get as my results. I ended up having a strong implicit bias for Black and Bad, and White and Good. I went in knowing there was possibility of bias but I was humbled that it came back as "strong." The important part going forward is to recognize that this bias exists and actively work to overcome it. It would be irresponsible to blame the test or call it inaccurate just because I don't like the results.

I have taken this IAT a few times prior to this class session. Once I completed the survey, its was deemed that I have a slight automatic preference to white people over black people. It is impossible to rid yourself of every bias. We live in America. The country has dealt with oppression, injustice, and prejudice since its "founding". Confronting these biases will help make you a more conscious person. Understanding where your biases come from helps you combat them.

I took the race IAT test three times on three different days and got three completely different results. Strong preference for both races and one test right down the middle. These results support what I have researched about the race IAT test. The race IAT test has been shown in empirical studies to be both unreliable and invalid. These two test metrics mean that the test does not provide consistent results and it also does not predict real world behavior. The results have been published by the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Because of this, I think that there is virtually nothing to be gained from taking the test because it has no predictive capability. My expectations fit well with my responses to the survey.
