Over time, a group of tectonic events has resulted in the current location and structure of the uk - in the last 700 million years, we have gradually drifted north from near the South Pole. Proof of this turbulent tectonic past is preserved in the rock record, making the UK a needed starting point for a geoscientist searching for clues to the Earths past.    
 
520 million years ago  much of the Earth’s continental landmass existed as two big continents, Gondwana and Laurentia, separated by 7,000 km of ocean. What is now the UK was separated between them – the north of Scotland on Laurentia, and the rest on Gondwana. The two were brought together during the Caledonian Orogeny
