I think they figured out all of the concerns about there debate and gave each person a topic to research in depth about, then came together so everyone could be prepared.

They needed to ask themselves questions that the other team would probably ask so that they can answer them/ counter claim.

in my opinion I think the steps that you need to take to prepare for a debate is that you need to gather facts and evidence that helps your side of the argument and you need to research about the topic as well to get a better understanding of what your arguing about
