¨ If you don ´ t want to sink you better figure out how to swim ¨ This shows how Rex wants Jeannette to learn how to swim by almost drowning but also shows how her parents want her to learn on her own but often results in dangerous ways. This quote stood out on how her parents wanted her to learn how to survive on her own.

Unstable living conditions and are always looking for a place to stay. And how they are forcing them to become independent at a young age because their parents won ´ t step up.

Some experiences I share with the characters is seeing my parents living check by check having to take care of 4 kids and seeing how my 2 older sisters started working at an early age to help them out so that they didn´t have to worry about me and my twin and helping them out by paying bills , taking us to school , picking us up and other expenses. My family is different because we didn´t grow up that bad in poverty we had a home and my parents worked hard to provide for basic necessities. I learned about a character by their perspective the way Jeannette ´ s emotions and her early acceptance of neglect was normal for her age.
