Responses from Mr. Wong

Please refer to questions on padlet to make sense of the responses

· Celine: For MC, they do not engage in extensive price competition due to the fact that they are small firms and there are numerous firms in the market. Hence, reduction in prices can reap minimal increases in profits. Keeping prices low ensures that firms are competitive but that does not equate to them participating in price competition. It is only regarded as price competition when firms are trying to outdo each other by reducing prices.

· Eileen: You have to bring in the diff based on extent as well if they also differ based on extent and then justify why. You can use the same points to explain why there are varying degrees of product development as well.

· Wei Lin: The government puts in anti-trust policies to prevent collusive behavior as well. So, oligopolies are also governed to prevent collusion.

· Megan: The basic message of the diagram is that when a single firm sells the product to the entire market, it produces at a larger scale and that will allow it to reap IEOS and produce at a lower MC as compared to a “smaller” PC firm. This can translate into lower prices for the consumer.
