Annie (Mercutio)

In act three scene one Mercutio is portrayed as quite hot-headed and very keen to fight. This almost compares him to Tybalt as he was just as hot headed and ready to fight during act one scene one. This gives a different view on the Montagues as so far we have only really seen Romeo and Benvolio who are not particuarly interested in fighting. He seems to like causing trouble but does not seem to hate peace in the way that Tybalt does although he does become angry when Romeo and Tybalt don't fight at first.
He also seems to like being the centre of attention. This is shown by his dramatic death as instead of getting help he makes his wound out to be less than it is and makes a pun about dying. "Ask for me tomorrow and you shall find me a grave man." This is also hown in the quote "men's eyes were made to look so let them gaze."
Mercutio seems to have a strong sense of family honour as he responds badly to Tybalt when he insults Romeo and he gets angry when Romeo doesn't defend his honour from Tybalt. He also refuses to let a fight go and clearly doesn't want to be seen as a coward. He has a lot of pride and can't let anything go as he has to look good.
He enjoys winding people up and making the mood happier.
His name is similar to the metal mercury which is very reactive ans is also the name of a planet which is the closest to the sun and is very hot. This means that the word mercury has connotations of being quite hot and reactive which relates to Mercutio's personality.

Tybalt is a personification of hatred in the play contrasting to the romance in the play.
The play does not suggest any reason for him to really detest the montague's , it may only be because he wants to keep his reputation as the strongest capulet or simply because he loves hating like Romeo loves loving.
It is evident from the way he particularly picks on Romeo knowing that he is the son of the montague family,
"Romeo, the love I bear thee can afford
No better term than this: thou art a villain."
"Boy, your words can’t excuse the harm you’ve done to me. So now turn and draw your sword."
Unlike mercucio who winds people up tybalt insults and throws abusive language ,to provoke hate back from others
Persuading them to break their own peace

In this scene he doesn't have a direct role in the actions that result in the deaths of Mercutio and Tybalt. In the scene he again plays the character that is peaceful and tries to stop the arguing. He says at the start 'And if we meet we shall not scape a brawl, For now these hot days is the mad blood stirring.' This shows how he is predicting the fight but wants to stop it happening as he fears for the life of his fellow montagues. But within the scene Mercutio hints at another side to Benvolio, he says 'Come, come, thou art as hot a jack in thy mood as hot-tempered, man
any in Italy, and as soon moved to be moody, and as
soon moody to be moved.' This hints towards the fact that in the privacy of his house he may not be the same calm and collected sense he is on the street throughout the rest of the play.
Finally towards the end of the scene Benvolio stands up for Romeo saying 'This is the truth, or let Benvolio die.' this shows his open devotion to Romeo but above all his hope for happiness amoung the two families. He is also willing to share the truth of what happened for the greater good of the two families.
