We are going to read the novella, Seedfolks by Paul Fleishman. A novella is a short novel, and this one is organized by individual vignettes, which is defined as small, graceful literary texts. Each vignette in the novella tells the story of a different character from that character’s point of view and in that character’s voice.

The Plan: The overall goal of the project is to develop an economically sustainable food scraps recycling plan for our school campus community. We will work to divert food scraps from the cafeterias and create compost for renewing our earth. Students will then research ways that our school project could impact the community by visiting local farms and/or co-ops to see if our compost to keep a valuable resource out of landfills where it contributes to leachate and greenhouse gasses, and takes up crucial space. When composting, the abundant nutrients and organic matter in food scraps are captured and applied to farms, homes and school gardens where they help build and conserve healthy soils. 

 HQW: Students Teaching Composting:  After students have learned to compost, and created a school compost bin, they can teach others about composting. Here, students can spread the word about composting with four student-designed projects to demonstrate the LTs.
