Mr. Nichols Intro-Psych. Disorders Project 4th period
1) You will pick an illness listed, and create information teaching the class about it including: a) diagnostic criteria b) statistics of population with illness c) symptoms and treatment d) after each portion of information you put in your words you must use in text citations 2) Without citing your evidence your grade will be a zero. Do not use wikipedia. You may find info on wikipedia, and then use their sources to get more reputable information. Strong online articles, academic journals, academic websites, government websites, and book sources should be sufficient. 3) Finally, you must reply with constructive critiques to at least one, if not more, answers posted by your classmates. Positive discussion is encouraged, but inappropriate posts will result in a grade of zero.

a)The diagnostic criteria for separation anxiety include the patient "developing inappropriate and excessive fear or anxiety concerning separation from those to whom the individual is attached. The fear, anxiety, or avoidance is persistent, lasting at least 4 weeks in children and adolescents and typically 6 months or more in adults. The disturbance causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, academic, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. The disturbance is not better explained by another mental disorder." (DSM-5 309.1)
b)The yearly percentage of the population suffering with separation anxiety is estimated to be 0.9% to 1.9% in adults, 1.6% in adolescents, and 4% among children.(DSM-IV, American Academy of Pediatrics).
c)The symptoms include unusual distress and talk or experience of being separated from attachment figure, excessive fear of harm coming to the attachment figure, nightmares, physical complaints, and refusal to leave attachment figure.(Barrett, P., Dadds, M., & Rapee, R.

ADHD: k. w.
also known as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a worldwide disorder typically known to be present during the teen years, but can continue on into adulthood. This disorder that persists for about six months, is inconsistent with one's attention spand and development level. The impairment can take place anywhere from school, to home, to many different social activity settings (https://www.health24.com/Medical/ADHD/Overview/Who-gets-ADHD-20130205).
- Diagnostic criteria-
You must have a clear inability to focus at particular functions (reoccurring). Difficulty to focus on tasks or activities and can be easily distracted (http://adhd-institute.com/assessment-diagnosis/diagnosis/dsm-5/).
-Statics of population with illness-
About 11% of all children are diagnosed with ADHD, among them majority of the percentage are young boys from age seven to seventeen (which may vary). Research shows that boys are 13% more likely to be diagnosed with this disorder.

Requirements/Diagnostic Criteria:
1. You have to be living with 2 or more identities or personalities.
2. You must experience amnesia, not just with traumatic events, but everyday ones as well.
3. You must be struggling with daily life tasks and struggle in major life areas.
4. Your identities must not be in relation with religious or cultural practices. For example, a kid with an imaginary friend does not mean they have DID.
5. Symptoms must not be a result of drugs, alcohol, or another mental illness.
Tracy, Natasha. 2017. Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) DSM-5 Criteria. Para 2-10. www.healthyplace.com/dissociative-identity-disorder/dissociative-identity-disorder-did-dsm-5-criteria/.
Statistics Of Population That Have DID:
- It is believed that the increase of child abuse caused an increase in DID patients.
- Females are more susceptible to acquiring the disorder due to females experiencing abuse more than men with a ratio of 10:1.
- For DID with the numbers of personalities in affected people the average is between 8 and 13. However, there has been a case that was reported to have 100 plus personalities.
- The most common cause of DID is a traumatic event that was previous to age 9.
Tracy, Natasha. 2017. Para 4 of 9. https://www.medicinenet.com/dissociative_identity_disorder/article.htm
Treatments:
1- Psychotherapy- This is where a licensed professional takes the patient and tries to use a special form of therapy. The therapy helps to try and merge all the personalities together into one.
2- Medication- Medicine is not the most effective way to treat DID , but if chosen it needs to be watched closely.
3- Self-Help- This way does not show any reason that it would not work. In fact, it is the most common way people try to conquer the disorder, They usually join online support groups to talk with others with the same disorder.
Bressert, Steve. Dec 17, 2017.

The disorder I chose to talk about is panic attacks. Panic Attacks are sudden on set of intense panic in which multiple physical symptoms of stress occur, often with feelings that one is dying( Minter & Elmhorst, 2017 pg 423).
Symptoms
One of the symptoms of a panic attack would be difficultly breathing, to prevent the difficultly breathing you can stretch out your breaths and take long measured breath of air instead rapid breaths. Chest tighting or pain would be another symptom , you can resolve this matter by breathing deeply and slowly. Wanting to avoid places or people would also be another symptom. To help with you can try meditation. Then there is phobic avoidance , this can be related to fear of places where escape is difficult. It can be manageable, if untreated it can lead into agoraphobia. Finally there is nausea, light headness , and sweating , these symptoms might not come all at once and may not be present during every panic attack . To prevent this focus on a comforting memory. (Lockhart , 2017, pg 1-6)
Treatment
Treatments for panic attacks would be medication, counseling, and yoga just to name a few. Your doctor may decide to add medication to your therapy to lessen the panic attacks and physical symptoms. They may have to try more than one medicine before finding the right that works best for you. Some people may even have to take more than one. Counseling shows you that the attacks physical effects don’t actually harm you. With counseling you will learn that relaxation techniques can help you when the attacks occur. (www.webmd.com)
Panic Diorder
• estimated 2.7% of US adults had panic disorder in the past year
•among adults it was higher for females (3.8%) than for males(1.6%)
•estimated 4.7% of US adults experience panic disorder at the some time in their lives
