There were finally people like me in spaces that I wanted to be in and I was fortunate enough to be able to build relationships with these teachers that I still have today. Although at that point English became my primary language, it was definitely a rewarding experience to have my teacher / parents speak the same primary language. I think I am still trying to fully understand the experiences of others who did not have the privileged educational experience that I did. Most of my teachers were white women, and finding connection and shared experiences was not challenging. College was the first time that I had multiple teachers of color, but even then, my school's teaching faculty was not diverse. However, I had a teacher in high school that treated me like a stereotype degenerate because of the way I looked. I was a punk rocker with a shaved head. My biology teacher stopped by and asked him if she could speak with me. His response was, go ahead, she isn't going to make a difference if she stays or goes because she isn't going to pass the class anyway. I dropped out of school shortly after that. Finished high school with a GED and spent what would have been my senior year in Paris France. She was wonderful; I can say that she was my healer, she was my protector, she was my friend, she was my teacher. Although she didn't look like me, we were very similar.
