When people think of Canada, the symbol that almost always comes to mind is a maple leaf. It is a symbol that represents the nation's peace, unity and diversity. The maple leaf also symbolizes what we Canadians stand for and value. It has been featured on the Canadian National flag since 1965 and is also located on some of Canada's currency like: the penny, the nickel and the loonie. It has been an important symbol ever since the First Nations first started draining the sap from maple trees to make maple syrup.

The beaver represents Canada for a number of different reasons. First of all, it is the nation's national animal. In the past, when European settlers came to Canada, they traded with the First Nations to get beaver fur to make articles of clothing, especially hats. For this reason, the beaver represents Canada's fur trade. This rodent is also featured on the nickel, which reminds us of its importance to the country. An interesting fact about this animal is that the beaver was featured on the first Canadian postage stamp in 1851.

Oktoberfest is a huge festival, celebrated during the fall. This is an important symbol of Kitchener, because here we have the second largest Oktoberfest festival in the world, after Munich, Germany. Before the city was forced to change its name from Berlin to something else, Kitchener was a very German influenced city. So, every year during this time, as people celebrate, they are reminded of the city's history and roots. It is so popular that thousands of people travel from all around the world to Kitchener, to participate in the celebration.
