Summary of Current Innovation

Summary of Current innovation
The terms Electronic Health Records (EHR) or Electronic Medical Records (EMR) are typically used as synonymous terms that reference an electronic platform for management of patient information. The EHR platform has a slightly different approach in that it focuses on the overall health of the patient, going beyond documentation of patient care. EMRs have been available for many years, but became more prevalent when the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) legislation passed in 2009, which provided incentives to begin using them (The University of Scranton, n.d.).

While EMRs and EHRs are already innovative, the future technology shows greater possibilities. Current and future advances in EHRs are abundant, and it would be arduous to attempt to list all of the possibilities. The focus of this discussion will be middleware add-on systems provided by Zoeticx.
Zoeticx is a cloud-based solution that integrates into most EHR systems already in place (Thanh6090, 2017). It provides preventative care management based on the individual risk factors of the patient, and chronic care management which allows providers two-way communication to remain informed and collaborate on patient care (Thanh6090, 2017).

This add-on system, Zoeticx, is already in place in some institutions to help manage the care of Medicare and Medicaid patients (Lagasse, 2017). The Zoeticx system integrates with other EHR systems and focuses on creating a wellness plan for each patient and prompts for preventative care based on individual risk factors, which has improved the health of the patient population and reduced costs at the same time (Lagasse, 2017).
The system is cloud-based, which allows seamless access to patient records by multiple providers working in different health systems (Thanh6090, 2017.) This supports collaborative care by the providers, and less reliance on patient self-reporting of medical issues and medications.

The proposed middleware solution demonstrates promise in working toward a total health solution for the benefit of patients and management of overall healthcare costs. It has demonstrated success in Rehobath McKinley Christian Healthcare Services (RMCHS) of Gallup, New Mexico, where it was integrated into their existing EHR (Lagasse, 2017). As a result of the focus on preventative care, the amount of outpatient business has increased which has offset the reduction of inpatient admissions and diagnostic studies (Lagasse, 2017). In addition to the assumption of improved health of the patients, RMCHS received “a bonus check for $80,000 from Medicare for containing costs, in addition to the new revenues that have been generated” (Lagasse, 2017).

Utilizing preventative health services to improve the health of patients has long been known to be advantageous. Having a system in place to provide prompts for preventative services needed based on individualized patient information and risk factors would certainly be beneficial to health care providers and allow them to focus more on the patient in front of them, rather than digging through the record to identify the needed testing. It also reduces the possibilities of inconsistencies in patient care management by various providers.

Because this has been proven effective to reduce costs and improve care in other health care organizations, administrators would do well to investigate this program and others, to determine the potential advantages to their patient population and their revenue streams. This should include a site visit to a health system that has the program in place to identify the ease of use, challenges or ease of the go live process, changes in patient care and outcomes, and changes in revenue. Proven valuable, a small pilot within their organization would be advisable to work out issues in advance and create subject matter experts or champions that can be used as a resource for the rest of the organization.

Ultimately, it would be best if this type of system were integrated into the main IT EHRs. With this and the many other advances in EHR systems, there is certainly more in store for the mainframe systems. This could be an effective health care management option to use until a more advanced EHR including this type of technology is developed.

He would organize the team, identify the parts assigned to each team member, help us to work efficiently, and bring all of the pieces together into an aggregate that would help our organization make a decision.

Carter – Communication. Carter’s strength of communication would be valuable in working with the vendor to explore the capabilities of the proposed solution. He would be important in establishing a rapport with a facility already using the solution, and gaining access to information about their experience and being able to see the solution live. Carter would also be valuable in presenting the findings of our investigation and sharing recommendations.

Isaac – Ideation. Isaac has the ability to see systems that are already in place, and envision how it can be improved. His ability to do so drives a passion for seeing it happen. That spark of energy is essential to embark on the process of investigating and possibly implementing a major change in processes.

Sheila – Strategic. Sheila would be an important member of the team to identify risks and benefits of the proposed Zoeticx solution. She is good at looking at alternative options and using good judgement to make sound decisions. Her ability to plan for the unexpected would be especially valuable as implementation takes place.
