In een experimenteel onderzoek onder kinderen van 20 tot 30 maanden oud stelden onderzoekers vast dat kinderen meer opstaken van papieren boeken dan van digitale boeken en dit verschil werd volgens de onderzoekers deels verklaard door de hogere frequentie van ondersteuning (‘supportive scaffolding’) die ouders bij het voorlezen van boeken bieden (Strouse & Ganea, 2017a); als het ondersteunende gedrag van ouders niet verschilt, zijn de leeropbrengsten van het digitale boek echter sterker dan die van het papieren boek, blijkt uit onderzoek onder kinderen van 17 tot 26 maanden oud (Strouse & Ganea, 2017b). Het gaat dan met name om ondersteuning in de vorm van uitspraken van de ouders die betrekking hebben op wat er te zien is op het scherm.
