Depending on the use of this type of formative assessment, it will allow for students to rate their current understanding of new learning, analyze/reflect on their efforts around the learning, and give feedback to teachers on an instructional strategy, materials, and teaching. For this strategy, teachers would have students write at the conclusion of learning (with a sentence starter usually provided) what they know about the topic just discussed. The materials needed would be paper or sticky notes for the students to write on. Being that TOTD's come at the end of a lesson, unit, or segment of study; it gives teachers a snapshot of the overall student learning and can help influence what and how students are taught the next day.

For this assessment strategy, the instructor asks a question, and students are given time to think about the question, how they will answer it, and finally answering the question. After some thought and time, students are then placed in pairs to discuss their responses. At this time, teachers would move around the classroom to observe and listen to the various student discussions. This lets teachers gather insight into the levels of student understanding and comprehension.

Questioning strategies may be used with individuals, small groups, or the entire class. Effective formative assessment strategies involve asking students to answer higher-order questions such as “why” and “how.” Higher-order questions require more in-depth thinking from the students. They can help the teacher discern the level and extent of the students’ understanding.

Homework is a great tool for teachers to use for a formative because in most cases, students are required to explain their thinking in homework. So, when teachers analyze this piece of students' work, they gain knowledge about a student’s current knowledge, attitudes, and skills about subject matter. They learn what their students' strengths and weaknesses are in certain subject areas of the content being taught. Analyzing homework also alerts teachers whether or not students need further or special assistance. This strategy gives teachers the opportunity to modify their instruction to be more effective for their students in the future.

For this strategy, teachers provide students with charts and markers (anchor charts or scratch paper) which students will use as they are in their groups of 4-6 students. Within these groups, students wil record a(n) answer(s) to an open-ended question. These charts will be rotated and passed around to each group to assess understanding. This is the time for students to share knowledge they have on a topic covered in class. Once the students finish with the chart, they pass it on to the next group. Once every group has worked on every chart, the teacher should engage students in a student lead discussion about the responses.
