Both poems Remains and War photographer, stem from personal experience. Both of the poems have a similar message. Remains is implying the physical and mental effect of war on the soldiers, after they've returned home. In this poem it themes an actual soldier fighting in war, deciding whether to pull the trigger of his gun. War photographers message is to show the mental scars war photographers carry and how they don't get noticed or get any attention for the job they do. However, the war photographer isn't actually involved in any war action, he is just observing it.

Duffy uses the image of a war photographer 'in his darkroom', developing his photo's. this is used to convey how a photographer can take one look at one of their photo's and all of thier horrific observations can come flooding back and the memories of terror may not ever leave.
On the other hand, Armitage uses the image of a soldier that's also returned 'home on leave' and is too suffering from flashbacks. This reveals the poem is to reflect the issue of a soldier been safe at home, but still suffering from the physical damage of war. This physical suffering however, will never effect anyone else, therefore, the soldiers suffering will to go unnoticed.

In both of these poems neither of the soldier or photographer, get recognised for the life threatening jobs they conceive. in war photographer the poem ends with the phrase 'they do not care'. This implies the photographers anger towards the ones that give no respect to the person taking the photo, for people to realise what is really going on in war. In the poem Remains, writer finshes the phrase ' end of story, except not really'. This demonstates that the war maybe over for the country and civilians, but for the soldier and his nightmare flashbacks. To get this point out in the poems, the writers use different experiences, to reveal the same outcome.

Both poems "Remains" and "War Photographer" are about war and the effects but different effects because when you are a war photographer you take photos of people at war and observe whereas been a soldier in Remains you have to go out and kill people in person which makes it more of a effect because you have just killed someone. Also Remains show the mental effect of war on the soldiers at war and when they go home and it stays with them forever. In War Photographer the message is to show the mental scars they carry and then people just blank them out and don't care about the job they do.

Both poets use irregular form and structure to show that war is not a regular. In War Photographer Duffy uses one sentenced words and then uses three line sentences to show the panicing of the soldiers in the war. Whereas in Remains Armitage uses different size sentences to show the guilt the soldier is thinking because he killed the robber but it was a split second though "probably armed, possibly not" but all three shot anyway and a dozen rounds went into the robbers belly and ripped him to pieces

Both poems, War Photographer and Remains present personal experiences of war. Remains was written to express how guilt and past experiences can haunt soldiers, even when they return home the memories that follow them are not taken seriously, despite the effects it has on them. The poem is from a collection called The Not Dead, Armitage wrote them so he could share the stories of survivors who risk their lives and minds to save their people and their country form war. Whereas, War Photographer was written to express Duffys feelings on whether capturing the devastation of war is vital for war to end or whether it's an invasion of privacy and that the photographer should try to defend the innocent people that suffer. Duffy had friends that were war photographers and this inspired her to discover why they did it and what others thought about it, she didn't believe it was right that war photographers don't get enough credit for their work even though they risk their sanity for their job. The messages of both poems are similar because they express how both soldiers and war photographers aren't given enough thanks for what they do even after they sacrifice their own lives for the well-being of others.

Both poets use enjambment to convey the chaos of war. Armitage uses enjambment to create the impression that the soldier has confused feelings about shooting a man, the soldier drags on his thoughts to express his guilt and how he's haunted by the memory of his death. Duffy also uses enjambment to show guilt, however the photographer is used to represent the truth about the horrors of war. As the photo develops the photographer feels more and more guilty, he then goes on to have flashbacks to when he took the photos. This suggests that he wanted to save the dying woman that's mentioned in the third stanza although he's only there to do his job.

Armitage implies that death isn't respected, he does this by using gruesome imagery such as 'tosses his guts back into his body'. This conveys that death is so regular that no-one sees it as unusual to see a dead body.
