At the age of 20 he sought a business partner and in his first year he got $450,000 . Cornelius Vanderbilt was born on May 27, 1794,&nbsp; in New York. At age 18, he contracted with out U.S Government to supply neighboring outpost&nbsp; during the war of 1812.&nbsp; From that he learned the art building ships and navigation. In 1817 Cornelius partnered with Thomas Gibson in the shipping business.
