Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust

The first, and probably most important stage of life because this is when a person is completely dependent on others for survival. Establishing a trusting bond to the caregivers , a baby learns how to trust and rely on others. Without a compassionate caregiver, a baby will learn that it cannot trust others for their needs. My mom said that she didn't go back to work until I was 2 years old so that she could stay home with me and take care of my needs.
"Experiences promote brain growth. The more interaction an infant experiences, the more brain development occurs."

In this stage, children begin to learn skills and control of their bodies, which leads to a feeling of independence. While in this stage, I wanted to do everything myself. I refused to sit in the shopping cart, instead, running about with my mom chasing me. I was given choices with clothing and food so that I felt like I had some control over my life and myself.
"Language development results from inner capacities and environmental influences."

Through play, children learn more about power and control. They want to lead others, but can feel a sense of guilt or doubt if they feel like they aren't building those skills enough. Children in this age group will often feel the need to "boss" other kids in an effort to gain power or control over a situation. This is the way I behaved in this stage. Often shy and introverted, I felt like I wasn't being listened to unless I yelled at others. This led to other kids not wanting to play with me.

Social interactions are extremely important during this stage of life. These interactions can lead to a sense of accomplishment, acceptance, and a sense of pride in ourselves. Children in this stage need adequate praise and encouragement to build on their sense of self. When I was in this stage, not only did I begin elementary school, but I also began playing basketball and soccer. These three things combined helped me to learn: independence, working as a team, and some responsibility.
"These years are a continued time for development of the prefrontal cortex."

Stage 5: Identity vs. Role Confusion

Probably the most confusing stage of life, this stage is essential for us to develop a sense of personal identity. In this stage, we tend to do what others are doing, until we realize that we have to stay true to ourselves in order to determine who we are, and who we want to be. For me, this was a very hard stage, on me, and on my family. Even with the guidance of my parents, I still chose some really poor friends and made some very bad decisions. I didn't know who I was or where I was going. When a few friends got into some trouble they could not get out of, I finally had to reflect on my choices and make some difficult decisions.
"A crucial step in becoming a productive, content adult."

Stage 5 is extremely important to obtain before moving on to this stage of life. Without adequately building a relationship with oneself, healthy relationships with others don't typically work out. In this stage of developing personal relationships, we learn how to build lasting relationships outside of ourselves. Loving and/or intimate relationships are explored. We learn what it takes to do for others. I am currently navigating this stage of life. So far, I have grown so much and have been able to rebuild relationships with my parents. Relationships that were fractured during my stage 5. I have grown to realize that it wasn't control that they were trying to have over me, instead, it was a guidance to ensure that I was on the right track in becoming a good person. I have rebuilt an amazing relationship with my sister & have learned to become a fun and loving aunt to my nieces. I am currently learning selfless behaviors to continue to build an amazing relationship with my fiancee so that we have a solid future.

In this second to last stage, people feel the need to nurture or care for things that will outlive them. Typically children fulfill this need; however, making positive changes that will benefit others is another way that this need can be fulfilled. Although I have a long time before I reach this stage, I hope to have at least one child, and possibly grandchildren throughout this stage of my life. I watch my sister with her small children, and my mom as a grandma now, and hope that I can feel that happiness and fulfillment that I see in them.

In our final stage of life, we tend to reflect upon the life we have led. We look back on the decisions we've made, with feelings of regret or pride. We hope that the choices we've made will benefit others, and that we didn't leave a negative impact on the world. I hope that when I get into this stage of life, I can look back with the utmost pride in my accomplishments. I hope that I can leave this world knowing that I did wonderful things for my family and for the Earth.
