There is no cure for irritable bowel syndrome but symptoms can be alleviated through a combination of dietary changes, medications, use of probiotics and treatment of associated mental problems.
It is important to make smaller and more frequent meals in order to reduce the incidence of cramps or diarrhea.
Foods that are low in fat and high in carbohydrates, such as pastes, rice, cereals, fruits and vegetables, should be favored.
Foods that tend to accentuate the symptoms, such as high fat, milk products, coffee, alcohol, artificial sweeteners, foods that increase the formation of gas, such as beans and cabbages, should be avoided.
Fiber may reduce constipation but increase gas formation, so it should be introduced in an accompanying fashion.
Within the medicines, the alternatives will depend on the symptoms and may be fiber supplements, laxatives, anti-diarrheas (loperamide), anti-spasmodic or anti-depressants.
Lubiprostone is used in forms associated with constipation and appears to improve abdominal pain, the consistency of fevers and the severity of constipation.
Antibiotics can sometimes be useful, especially in cases where the presence of overgrowth of bacterial flora in the small intestine is demonstrated.
Probiotics are living microorganisms, generally bacteria, similar to those that exist under normal conditions in the gut. Its administration in large quantities tends to improve the symptoms of the irritable colon.
The approach to mental problems is an essential aspect of controlling this syndrome.
It is essential to establish a good doctor-patient relationship.
The clinician should be aware of the patient's concerns and emotional state.
Decreased stress, rest, and physical exercise may contribute to a reduction in the frequency and severity of symptoms, positively influencing the disease.
Improving or resolving the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome is a time-consuming process, which can last for six months or more.
Thus, patience is essential and the role of the doctor-patient relationship is essential in order not to allow frustration or withdrawal of treatment.
