I can use folk art in my 12 grade Eld class by having students make a papel picado of an object that represents their culture or tradition.

Teaching art forms in our bilingual class setting foments a space of appreciation of a language through another means.

Learners are able to visually, physically, & emotionally connect to a language through art. I teach dance to students, and I purposely talk about the songs, the outfits, and the movements in Spanish so students are embraced by the language.

1. Focusing on folk arts allows parents and other community members to share their knowledge even if they do not speak English, and it allows the students to see the value of the culture.

We can have students create and practice folk art in bilingual classrooms and display it on the walls for example. It is a way of making it culturally sustaining.
Some challenges could be the teachers lack of knowledge in folk art. We can solve this by having community members help or using online resources.
