It’s 5 feet 8 inches tall and was made from a block of Carrera marble that Michelangelo claimed to have been the most perfect block of marble he’s worked with. There is a pyramidal composition made with the figures. Also, the figures are disproportionate to each other. Mary’s head is small compares to the rest of her torso. This was done to show the physical challenge of a woman holding a full grown man. Jesus is also shown with minimal damage, despite having been crucified. Both figures, despite being sorrowful, also look at peace. Michelangelo was commissioned by French Cardinal Jean de Bilheres Lagraulasto make the most beautiful sculpture a man can make for his future tomb in St. Peter’s Basilica.

He is depicted nude while holding a slingshot, which was the weapon he used in the biblical story to fight Goliath. The slingshot is difficult to see, indicating the reason he won was because of his won cleverness. This depiction of him was also before the battle, though he was typically shown after the battle while triumphant. David is standing in contrapposto, while also in concentration. This sculpture was commissioned by the Opera del Duomo to be placed in a niche of the Cathedral of Florence. This sculpture was left unfinished by two artists who said the stone was imperfect, leaving the stone neglected for 25 years, until Michelangelo was asked to finish it. When Michelangelo finished it, it was decided that the sculpture was far to prefect to be placed high up so it was then placed in Piazza della Signoria.

The figure in the sculpture looks as if he were in a deep sleep as he struggles for life. His right hand is on his chest while his left is on top of his head. All his weight is on his right left while his left is limp. His head is leaning to the right shoulder. In order to support the weight, there is a baboon behind the legs. The front part was completed while the back part was still rough. The details of the entire figure shows the death of him.

The baby Jesus is standing upright and only loosely supported by Mary’s hand looking as if he’s about to step out into the world. The baby Jesus has a serious expression, and looks like he’s going to be a leader. Mary gazes away from Jesus, looking as if she already knows his fate. Mary looks emotionless, but not because she is, but rather she’s trying to remain stoic as she knows her son’s fate. The movement of the drapery is very detailed, similar to the drapery on the Pieta. This sculpture is believed to be an alter piece. A wool merchant from Bruges commissioned it, hence the name.

He spoke of the divine power to “make man”. He also liked sculpting more than painting as he didn’t really want to paint the Sistine chapel ceiling.
