Sal thinks maybe there's something that she doesn't know and that Phoebe's mom isn't happy with what she's doing. He said "wonderful'' and was so happy and surprised. Then he got to Sal's desk, she was really nervous because she was new so she didn't know that she had to write a journal. After checking out of the hospital Sal asks Gramps if they should call her dad and he tells her that calling and telling him about the situation they were in would only make him worry about them. When they get outside Sal starts to hear the warbling of a bird, this reminds her of a tree that they had back in Bybanks, Kentucky. She would always hear warbling coming from the tree but she could never see the bird that was singing. She had thought of the bird song as a true bird song and so she would stay beneath the tree trying to listen and catch a glimpse of the bird, she would even try to sing the song. The chapter 13 was about how Sal was starting to tell Gram and Gramps about Mr. Birckway. While swimming in the river a black-haired boy with a knife said that the river was private property. While sal's grandfather argues with the boy about it being private property or not the boy starts to rummage through gramps's pockets. In order to distract the boy and keep him away from gramps's pockets, he tells Sal to show the boy a trick. Sal throughs a rock perfectly into the knot of a tree leaving the boy astonished. Shortly after more arguing Grams gets bitten by a highly poisonous snake. Grams is quickly taken out of the water where the boy slits her ankle and begins to suck the poison out of her leg. She was carried to the car and rushed to the hospital. In the hospital while waiting Grams gives Sal $50 to give to the boy, but instead the boy denies it.
