Our Legacy

Jumana (when tapped): I am Nicolas Barre and I fathered all IJ convents. I started many IJ schools in France and my vision eventually spread around the world. I spread God's embracing love as much as I could and when my time was up, I passed on the mantle. (walking towards Pelita, whispering in Pelita's ear)

Pelita: I am Mother Mathilde and Father Barre guided me to Singapore. I provided education for girls, so uncoom at the time. With a group of sisters, we founded many convents like CHIJ Katong Convent. Girls found safe space in these walls, protected by our will.

Andrea: (holding book as prop) I studied here during the second world war. I studied for three years until the British used our school as a military and internment camp. I studied my remaining year at Ceylon Road under the name Ceylon Girls' School but I know that I am IJ girl at heart.

(Andrea hands Iffah a book, which she passes on to a Sonia)

Sonia: I was a teacher at this school for 10 years. I was here when the Japanese came and tried to push their agenda. They tried to bring us down but I knew better. I continued to educate my girls no matter what because that is what Father Barre would have wanted.

  As the liturgical consultant, I advise on Catholic traditions, ensuring the chapel’s design reflects religious symbolism through cross motifs and a sacred spatial arrangement. My role is to guide the space in a way that honors faith while creating a reverent atmosphere.
