In 1937, he launched the Great purge, a campaign of terror directed at eliminating anyone who threatened his power. Thousands of old Bolsheviks who helped stage the Revolution in 1917 stood trial. They were executed or sent to labor camps for "crimes against the Soviet state." When the Great Purge ended in 1938, Stalin had gained total control of the Soviet government and the Communist Party.

This group shared his belief that Germany had to overturn the Treaty of Versailles and combat communism. The group later named itself the National Socialist German Workers' Party, called Nazi for short. Its policies formed the German brand of fascism known as Nazism. Hitler asserted that the Germans, whom he incorrectly called “Aryans,” were a “master race.” He declared that non-Aryan “races,” such as Jews, Slavs, and Gypsies, were inferior. He called the Versailles Treaty an outrage and vowed to regain German lands. Hitler also declared that Germany was overcrowded and needed more lebensraum, or living space. He promised to get that space by conquering eastern Europe and Russia.

he Weimar Republic was a period of time after World War I that replaced the Imperial form of government. This Republic was a short era of peace between the Germans and Europe. Some of this was because of the effects of the Treaty of Versailles, which had significantly reduced the power of Germany. This parliamentary democracy was formed after the fall of Germany in WWI and was the beginning of an interesting time for Germans. The Weimar Republic technically lasted from 1918 until 1945, but most people believe that its power ended in 1933 when Hitlers Third Reich took over the country.
