When viewed through a psychoanalytical lens, the reader can infer that Lousia needs independence. She feels like she is somewhat tied to Joe. This is shown to us in evidence 1 when she speaks with a "mild stiffness" and is "constrained in her effort to reassure him". This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but this shows us that she is behaving like the id. In evidence 2 Lousia's emotions are shown when the author also writes "Lousia's first emotion... was consternation". Consternation is having feelings of anxiety or dismay and Lousia shows us this throughout the short story. This shows us that her mind is not very balanced, especially if she is feeling anxiety when she is with Joe. Also stated in evidence 2 the author writes that "fifteen years ago she had been in love with him... at least she considered herself to be". This is also another example that shows us Lousia's brain and mind are not exactly in the right place, since she is questioning her love for Joe. After reading the short story of "A New England Nun" Lousia's emotions and how she behaves like the id is what makes her independent, but it is also what holds her back from being one with herself.

All in all the true theme of "A New England Nun" written by Mary Freeman is that every person needs to be independent. This is mainly shown to us throughout the entire short story. As described in our analysis Lousia's emotions is what makes her independent but it also what restricts her
