I think there’s a big one up here, is there? “
 Maya walked into the veggie garden and looked at a carrot plant “This is big.” She said to the Educator. 
 Educator : “Oh! look at this one, Crystal.”
 Crystal replied “Wow!” moving the leaves back and looking at the carrot in the dirt. 
 The Educator said “Look at that. OK, just move back so we can see how big it is. Do you think that one would be a big carrot yet?” Maya pulled back the leaves. “Yeah.” She said. 
 Educator: “Alright. Well, can you hold it together?”
 Maya: “Yeah. “ Maya reached down to the base of the plant and looked at the carrot in the ground. Maya said “That one's not big enough.”
 Educator replied “ It’s not big enough? What about this one Crystal’s got?”
 Maya: Oh, let’s see, let’s see, let’s see. Maya moved over to where crystal was and pulled back the leaves, looking at the bottom of the carrot plant. 
 Maya began pulling out the carrot at the base of the plant, while Crystal was pulling on the leaves at the top of the plant.  

“Don’t pull it, don’t pull it.” Maya said to crystal. 
 Educator : “Here you go. Just pull hard. Is it going to come out? I’ll give it a bit of a move. “ The educator wiggled the plant to loosen it in the ground and then stood back saying “You go. Pull. “ 

Crystal pulled the plant out of the ground and held it up. “oh, what’s that?” the educator asked. “That’s Tiny!” Maya said. 

“that’s a tiny one isn’t it?” said the educator “that’s a round one. Look at that one” the educator said, pointing at another carrot on the bunch. 

“that is a big carrot” said crystal. 

“it’s a big carrot, do you want to take that home tonight?” asked the educator. “Yeah” crystal replied. 

“But first you need to wash it” Maya replied. 

“yes we do need to wash it first” the educator responded.

LO 2.4.5 Maya is showing growing appreciation and care for natural environments. This is evident in the way that she cares for the plants, watering them as needed and gently picking the vegetables when they are ready.

LO 2.4.7 Maya is developing an awareness of the impact of human activity on environments and the interdependence of living things. This is evident in the understanding she is showing with regards to what we need to do to care for plants.

LO 1.4.2 Maya is showing this when she engages in and contributes to shared play experiences with other children. She was engaging with and conversing with Crystal during this play experience.

 

Development:

Physical- fine motor: carefully pulling back leaves of plants

Gross motor: Pulling up carrot plants. 

Social: conversations with other child and educator.
