Although I did not attend church frequently, I was not exposed to any other cultures or religious practices throughout my youth until my late teens early 20s. 
My family members are all working to middle class. Growing up in rural British Columbia I was never exposed to much outside of my race or ethnicity. In my teens I began studying performance art in the Vancouver city center. This experience gave me a different socialization exposing me to different cultures, traditions and different abilities in myself. Changing my perspectives outside of my family traditions and beliefs. 
Leaving home at 17 and working in the arts brought me down on the class level of my family

This time in my life was profound in my understanding of where I sit in my privileges and my oppressions as the developmental disabilities that were apparent in Canada did not exist in Brazil.I found a freedom in my potential that I would not have found if I would have stayed in Canada. At 39 I became pregnant with my son Zion who is mixed Afro descent and white Anglo. Understanding my place as a white woman raising a mixed child was now something I faced, in order to protect him and give him the tools he needs in order to navigate the systemic issues that will face him throughout his life. As a single parent in Brazil, I was not seen or felt as an oppressed person. but coming back to Canada in the individualistic capitalistic culture we live in, it became very apparent that I was to face the oppression in a way I would never have imagined.

The hospital was full and disorganized however; because I had a Canadian passport and knew the right people, I was able to go through the front of the line. My Canadian passport and my white skin privilege saved both my life and my son's life that night.

The value of community and family and how they view children in everyday life took away the oppression that I feel as single parent. It was the opposite, becoming a mother in that culture was empowering. you can see how strong community support can change everything for a women with child. ]]> 2021-11-29 03:37:23 UTC https://padlet.com/nicolehorsford/Bookmarks/wish/1917022231 nicolehorsford https://padlet.com/nicolehorsford/Bookmarks/wish/1917143706 Classism my biggest oppression: all though my family is working to middle class, because of the decisions I have made in my life and the intersectionality of my( ableism ) my learning disability which was something that stopped me from going into traditional education and limiting many job opportunities. I was always living below the poverty line.  As a single parent coming back to Canada with a 1-year-old child and little to no family support I have had to navigate the social assistance system.  2 years having no childcare and no strong community has left me in a position that keeps me and my son continually relaying on social services. The disempowerment I feel from my family is so heavy, as I am not in the nuclear family that was expected of me. This is not just the view of my family, but it clear to me in every day life with in  Canada culture. Man do not get look at differently when then do not care for their children. Women are left with all the work and expected to make a living in a time when costs of living are so high, and even them they never make as much as men do. “oppressions take place when person policy is enacted unjust and induvial people's way of a fair living''. ( Baines D, 2007 ).However; Being part of more privileged groups them groups of Oppression.  Giving me more mobility with in the wed of my Oppressions. "people are shaped by their social gropes not determined” ( Baines Dona, 2007)My religious practice is Candombla something I don't tell many about because of religious bigotry.
