Accpetance is a motif prevalent in the first chapter of Frankenstein. Victor’s mother was in a tough situation and victor’s father selflessly decided to accept her into the family. Then, Elizabeth, having just lost her father, was saved from her poor neighborhood and accepted into victor’s family.

An allusion made in the beginning of the book is an allusion to the Bible. In the story of Adam and Eve, Adam was lonely as he was the only human on Earth. So, God created Eve out of one of his ribs for him. In the beginning of the book, Walton was lonely, and yearned for friend, and amongst his journey, he found one-this alludes to the Adam and Eve story of the Bible. The underlying meaning is that humans naturally desire not only human interaction but also human connection.

An important motif present in the first chapter is the role of women. In his first recollection of his adopted sister, Elizabeth, he describes his fondness of her more like love for an object than love for a sister which reflects the idea of the role of women in the 19th century where women were expected to be passive and doll like.

His romantic description of this region first establishes the value of beauty that will continue to be present through the book.
