Upskilling workshops

proposing 3-4 workshops across the year

1) case studies - how to approach and solve them (Valid frameworks/MECE structure etc)

2) logical thinking - how to be a strategic thinker

3) policy paper writing

4) any other proposed by fellow committee members

The case competition could be held at the end of these 4 workshops. We could collaborate with the business school to help solve cases. Research team could support with building the case studies.

Since I missed the orientation, I might say something that doesn’t quite align, so I’d really appreciate it if you could point that out for me. I also think it would be great if, rather than just having seminars among ourselves, we could invite people working in international organizations or think tanks here in Singapore to share what issues they have addressed and what solutions they have proposed.

I missed the kickoff meeting so I'm not sure if some of these ideas have already been discussed.

Short term

1. Case preparation - We could form peer groups within members to help them get ready for policy consulting spaces by practicing and discussing cases together

2. Workshops - We could run short training workshops where students learn how to solve policy consulting cases by reading and discussing real-world case studies. For instance, the research team could identify 1-2 policy challenges every month and find out how they were resolved. Members would be given the policy challenge and asked to come up with solutions which would then be discussed and compared with actual solutions

Long-Term

1. Case book/repository with a social policy lens - We could develop an SPCC casebook that includes frameworks and practice problems tailored to public and social sector consulting using examples from the World Bank, Dalberg, UNDP, and the like

2. Projects - We could partner with NGOs or social enterprises in Singapore and Asia to support them on specific projects, similar to the PAE where groups of members could work on real policy challenges

Workshops, Discussions and Roundtable conferences for Upskilling

1. Policy x Business Roundtable- A joint roundtable discussion where policymakers, business leaders to discuss how business strategy and policy intersect.

2. Workshop: "Business Strategy for Policy Professionals", "Accountability in PPPs"- training on financial modeling, public-private partnerships, management and strategy

3. Policy Walks: To explore policy problems around the city.

4. Policy Bootcamp: Training on M&E frameworks, data analysis etc.

5. Discussions: Policy Dialogues with Practitioners and Fireside chats
