I believe Shakespeare is trying to make the audience feel some type of compassion for Claudius. He did a horrible thing and throughout the book he has never admitted to feeling guilty or anything so he was seen as this terrible guy. He is a bad guy don't get me wrong but by adding this line in the book I think it's shakespeare's way of saying he's a person too he feels guilty and knows he's in the wrong.

This quote took place directly after the scene in the Murder of Gonzago when Lucianus poor the poison in the kings ear and kills him. The fact that Claudius told the people to turn on the lights and stop the entire play means that he found out that Hamlet knew about him killing his father, because Hamlet added that part in the play. That was also like a confirmation for Hamlet, because he was sure that Claudius killed his father but I feel like he wasn't 100 percent sure because I mean a ghost told him so I bet he had some doubts. But when Claudius reacted the way he did Hamlet was 100 percent sure.

Claudius is a character that doesn't really think things through. He is most definitely a action first type of character. You can tell by looking at this quote. This is just after he realized Hamlet knows what he did so he finds Guildenstern and tells him to get ready to Hamlet to England right away. Also in the Play-Within-Play textual evidence, him acting out like that is what made Hamlet 100 percent sure he killed his father. If he thought about his reaction and didn't make a big deal about it then perhaps Hamlet would have thought he himself was going crazy and second guess his beliefs of whether or not Claudius actually killed his father.

This quote describes Claudius's relationship with Hamlet in a subtle way. Claudius is known to the readers as a selfish person who will do whatever it takes to get what he wants, but what some of us don't realize is that although he killed his father to get the crown and married his mom, Claudius has a soft spot for Hamlet and always has. By asking Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to stay and hang out with Hamlet until he gets better is Claudius's way of taking care of Hamlet. He could have just sent him away right when Hamlet started acting crazy, but he kept him in Denmark and tried to find ways to get him normal.

This is when Voltemand comes back from talking to Norway about a war between the two Kingdoms. Norway says they will not attack Denmark if they allow safe passage through Denmark to get to Poland. But I have to say I feel the theme for Claudius in this act was just taking care of family. In this act the only thing Claudius was worried about or thinking about was Hamlet. Even when Voltemand came back with the good news from Norway, after Claudius was relieved from the war he was like "okay now we'll talk more later, lets go find out whats wrong with Hamlet". I think that says a lot about Claudius although he is known as being a crazy selfish king, we have to be able to look at different perspectives of characters or you never will truly understand them. And that's what I believe Shakespeare was trying to show us in this act.

In this quote King Claudius is asking Gertrude not to drink, because it is the poisoned cup. Like I've said before, King Claudius has this horrible, murderous guy reputation but has shown at times that he does care about other people. In this quote he kind of blows his cover by telling the queen not to drink from that specific cup, but allowing Hamlet to drink from it. However he does not care because he loves Gertrude and wants her to live. I think that shows that he can be a good guy to the people he cares about, and he really cared about Gertrude.

This quote came from Fortinbras at the end of the play when he came into the castle and saw everyone dead. I think basically what Shakespeare was trying to get us to realize was thateverything that goes around, comes around. When you think about it, everyone that died did something that they didn't necessarily deserve to die for but deserved some type of punishment. Gertrude obviously had an affair with Claudius before King Hamlet died. Claudius tried to kill Hamlet. Hamlet killed Polonius and tried to kill Claudius. And Laertes tried to kill Hamlet. I think Shakespeare main message in the play was simply Karma is a cruel mistress.
