As women grew up and older, their jobs were very limited: such as a stay-at-home mother, a school teacher, or a maid. 
When a woman married, everything that was hers then became the husbands. As soon as she was married, she was one with the husband. Even her body was considered as his property. If she refused sexual actions, he could basically refuse to listen to her and rape her.
