Also I agree with North argument because the slaves are getting tortured and getting nothing out of it. One thing I learned about the Civil War today was the Southern states believed in the concept of states' rights, which gave individual states the authority to govern themselves and make decisions independently of the federal government. When conflicts arose between state and federal laws, particularly regarding issues like slavery, states' rights became a divisive issue that contributed to the growing divide between the North and the South.

Name: Santiago Perez 821

The North had the stronger argument because it was consistent and focused on keeping the country together while also moving toward more freedom for everyone. The South, on the other hand, claimed it cared about states’ rights, but really it just wanted to protect slavery. This is clear because the South only supported states’ rights when it helped their cause. What’s interesting is that even though the Confederacy was built on the idea of state independence, it ended up creating a stronger central government during the war. They even forced people into the army through a draft, which went against their whole idea of states being free to make their own choices.

One important difference between the north and the south is their ideals in slavery. The northern ideal is that, there should be no slaves at all because it is unfair for the slaves to be treated unfairly because of their color. On the other hand the southern ideals is that there should be slaves, and how the government allows it so therefore it is fine for people to own slaves. I believe that the northern ideals is a better argument, because it shows how people where all made equal and one should not be discriminated against because of ones skin color. I learned about the fugitive slave acts preventing the slaves who had escaped and now is in a free land unable to become free and is still wanted as an escapee.

The North believed slavery was wrong and wanted to stop it from spreading into new territories, while the South saw slavery as essential to their economy and way of life. I think the North had the stronger argument because they were fighting for human freedom and equality, while the South’s argument was based on keeping people enslaved. One new thing I learned about the Civil War is that books like Uncle Tom’s Cabin could have such a big impact by changing how people thought and felt about slavery.

Meanwhile the South agreed with slavery and depended on it. I believe the North had the better argument because even though the South depended on it for its economy, a book about the life of slaves really shows how bad the conditions were for them. Something I’ve learned about the Civil War was the fight/battle between Sanford and Dred Scott that happened in 1857 and how much the courts agreed with the owners rather than the slave’s family and life.

NAME: Chloe Lian

CLASS: 821

DATE: Mon, Sept 29, 2025

one important difference between the Northern and Southern perspective on the presidential election of 1860 which Lincoln got the most votes (mostly North), the North was delighted with the result but the south was not. This was because Lincoln never supported slavery which is why the North voted for him but the south was disappointed that he got elected- since south rely on slaves for farming and economics. I believe the north has the strongest argument because soooooo many people including the president are against slavery. I also believe that slavery is unnecessary and unfair to slaves because they are freaking human being that deserve freedom and equal rights; not some southern farmer and land owner's "properties". Like I just think that this whole thing is just so stupid because they are just violating human rights and ruining millions of lives when there is no point, just because they look different. Lincoln made a law that stopped the spread of slavery, there was also a book published called "Uncle Tom's Cabin" that is about slaves that escaped cruel but true experience about being a slave before escaping. Her book became worldwide popular that so many people read it and went against slavery. The women that wrote this book meet Lincoln and Lincoln made a joke saying "This is the woman that started the Civil War". One new thing that I learn in today and Friday's lesson is about the Dred Scott v. Sandford because the other texts and articles we read are things we learned in 7th grade meanwhile this is something new. Scott fought for some civilship but he failed and decide to go to the supreme court. even though he still lost the case he is a great example of showing determination and fighting for what's right.

Name: Dilnura Nurmamatova 821

9/29/25

A difference the North and the South had was their view on slavery. The south wanted slavery to expand and continue on due to their economy being depended on agriculture. On the other hand, the North had factories and believed in equal rights for white people and people of color. In my opinion, the North had a stronger argument due to their consistency of keeping the Union a whole while striving for independence for all people of color. The South left the Union in fear of the tradition of slavery dying but used the excuse of state rights and independency. Contrasting with that, the South created a stronger central government during the Civil War and forced people into fighting in war with a draft which completely cancels out the point of their separation and creation of the confederacy. In conclusion, the North had a stronger argument.

The northern perspective was that people were happy Abraham Lincoln became president because he was against slavery. The southern perspective was that people were angry since Lincoln didn't support slavery, even though he didn't end it right away.

Name: Jannat Haque

Date: 9/29/25

One important difference between the Northern and Southern perspective is their views on slavery. For example like how the south depended on slavery heavily for labor and other stuff. The north however weren’t fond of the idea at all and didn’t want slavery to expand to the new territories. I think the north had a much stronger argument because the south really only needed slaves for their work but their argument doesn’t justify how cruel using slaves for their owns needs were. The north had a much stronger argument that could support why slavery shouldn’t be expanded. One thing I learned today about the Civil war was about the Missouri compromise, where Missouri was made into a slave state and Maine was a Free state this was to make both sides happy.

I believe that the North side is stronger as slaves are humans too and that there equal. It is not worth for a slave getting tortures everyday for their work and that the North has better reasoning and explaining overall. Slaves deserve basic human rights. One thing I learned is the Fugitive law and that if a escaped slave is found, they have to be be captured and sent to jail.
