Kausalyaa Chandriah (A167959) WEEK 4

Name : Kausalyaa Chandriah
Matrics no : A167959
Week 4 : 9th August - 15th August

1. Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?
In short, yes the objectives I had set for this project were fulfilled. To elaborate, my objectives for this posting were to understand the theory behind baking and using it, to dedicate time into refining my baking skills and to bake something delicious and visually appetizing for my family. For the past 4 weeks, I realized that understanding the theory behind baking came naturally as soon as I attended the online course hosted by yuppiechef. Not only that, by putting the knowledge into practice all the theory started making sense and helped me fulfill my objective of refining my baking skills and creating delicious desserts, some of which I even made changes to, to appease my palate.

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?

Trials and errors. Often times this can be the most frustrating part about experimenting. However this time I came around to enjoy it the most as making mistakes not only made me more diligent with my choices but also helped me understand the process of baking better.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)

The most challenging part about this project was organizing. Let it be my time or my tasks, I struggled organizing in the beginning. Baking requires time however not all the minutes are spent on making the dessert. 70% of the time I either had to revise my recipe or fulfill other elements of my task like shopping for groceries or making different elements for my dessert which don’t necessarily involve baking like making the frosting. Tasks like these although are small may influence the outcome greatly. I had to make sure I planned out every minute of my designated bake time to make sure my final outcome turned out well. In the first two weeks of my project, I hit a few bumps in organizing my tasks properly, this resulted in insufficient ingredients, melted frosting from letting it out on the counter too long and a failed cake because I didn’t pay enough attention to the instructions from being distracted by my other baking project.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)

Learning from online sources has been a huge success to me.I cannot believe how much of a learning curve baking has been to me with only online baking tips and recipes. I started with little to no knowledge and I ended up with so much new information that has made me capable of baking a variety of desserts.

Not only that, my last dessert a vanilla sponge cake with strawberry jam and cream cheese frosting has been a huge success. I incorporated all the new knowledge I attained and managed to make something so delicious which turned out to be a crowd pleaser.

5. What can be improved in this project?

The recipes I chose. I opted for easier recipes since I was afraid of failing. However, I wish I would’ve given recipes with harder techniques a go as that would’ve enabled me to learn newer skills.

1. Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?
Alhamdullilah after 1 month of consistent learning. I have managed to complete the project “Ku Bersuara Tanpa Suara” for my elective posting. There are few objectives I put before starting this project and I think I fulfil all of them. I am proud that now I have gained more knowledge about mute people and how they interact on daily basis. Besides, I was able to learn some basis sign language such as alphabets, numbers, greetings, schedules, family and festivals in a steady manner within a fixed timeframe and apply the knowledge gained in form for video for the task given by the openlearning platform. My critical thinking in solving problem arises along the journey is also improved. Lastly, I humbly reflected and analyzed the experiences gained throughout the learning process for future reference.

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?
The journey. It has been an interesting journey because I have never felt so calm in learning. As a medical student everything is so rushed like sometimes I really feel like I have no time to breathe. However, for this elective posting, it is another story. It was so calming, with its steady pace I could absorb new knowledge like a sponge. Maybe it is not as hard as I imagined but who cares? I could feel the satisfaction in learning new thing.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)
The most challenging part in this project was the quiz. I remember the part where I got stuck for a long time (few days to be exact) because I could not understand their gesture to even write an answer. So, what I did to overcome this obstacle was I review very single tutorial video available there on another window of my browser and compare it side by side to the quiz video. After all the hard work, I finally managed to complete the quiz.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)
The video making task in the module. I am not a fan of making a video at the first place but as a requirement to complete the course I still had to do it. No matter how much I hate it, but this task was the smoothest of them all because they just give the situation and I just have to narrate my own story to be incorporated in the video. I like the quiz part the most but sometimes it gave me headache as I could not figure out the answer.

5. What can be improved in this project?
If I were given another opportunity, I would incorporate more input in my project. As we know, I only learn about Bahasa isyarat Malaysia asas 1 for this elective posting project. This is because I have self-doubt on myself to learn sign language. I always thought it will be so difficult so I would not be able to complete the task if I put more stuff into my project. To some extend I am still satisfied with the content I chose for this project and proud of myself for completing it but I still feel I can absorb more knowledge.

Dayana Nazira Binti Abdul Razak (A168425) Week 4

Date : 30/08/2021

Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?
Throughout these 4 weeks of diving myself into baking world, I can say that I am proud with the substantial amount of knowledges I have gained. From being unsure about measuring ingredients accurately, not knowing the uses of different types of flour, not knowing what kind of heat used for baking different type of products, I can say that my skills have been improved a lot and my muscle memory in baking has becoming a lot better. I am excited to try doing some recipes without the use of oven in college later such as burnt cheesecake!

What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?
So far the thing that I enjoyed the most is experiencing every
trial of products that I bake came into life! The fun part of it is also being satisfied with the taste, texture and also seeing my judges (parents) enjoying my baked goods. Although I received some comments on what I am lacking off and things I should improvise, the fact that I managed to bake products that I usually bought from other bakers makes me the happiest at the moment. It was such a serotonin boost moment!

What have you found challenging about this project?
To be honest, baking is not always sunshines and rainbows.
There are a few times that I failed especially when making the mixture. One moment to be highlighted is when I tried making cream puff, I was quite worried and felt weird because my mixture was hard and dry not like in the video. So I thought which part did I do wrong as I have been following the recipe 100%, as I revised back, in the recipe it mentioned to not put any white yolk in the mixture, however when I did that it gave me a very dry texture. So, I decided to re-do a second mixture and tried to mix it with a bit of white yolk and then the mixture was perfect and looked exactly the same like the one in the video. That moment was challenging for me because I have to really dig into which part I should change a bit to get a better texture. For a second, I thought my cream puff would never came into life! Sometimes, some recipes need a little bit of "instinct use" for it to come out perfect and that is very challenging for a beginner like me. It took me a while to rethink next steps as I do not want to do any waste of ingredients. Plus, I have learned that recording video while baking is actually an extreme job as I have to focus on two things at one time. The lighting, the position of the camera, the timing of the video has been one of the many challenges throughout the project

What has really worked?
Despite of some challenges I faced, a lot of things have turned out perfectly. From a simple baking (biskut sarang semut) to a complicated baking, I have managed to make these products with the guidance of my coordinator and also by substantial reading of recipes. The knowledge I have gained is not only in terms of baking products but also tips on how to promote products and attract customers to try my baked goods.

What can be improvised in this project?
I think the most crucial thing to be improvised in this project is my time management. I have stated earlier that I have planned a very perfect schedule to prevent myself from being overwhelmed, however, with unexpected things and uncertainties that happen during baking itself, it has already been time consuming. The time taken to communicate with my coordinator, the time used to read up on the ingredients, sudden lacking of ingredients due to few trials, I should allocate a whole day to focus on just making the products.

Name:Durkayiny Sankar
Matrics no: A167906
Week 4: 9th august-15th august

1. Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?
Yes, all the objectives were fulfilled.
For the past week, it’s all about learning the theory behind baking. If your understanding about baking is good ,then you are good to go. Now , I had mastered proper techniques to measure the ingredients.

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?
What i enjoyed the most was the process. The process was therapeutic and peaceful. Baking allows me to be in control of everything.Besides the necessities, you are the one deciding how much of one flavor you want over another and can even add a completely new item to the recipe to enhance the flavor if you desire. You have the freedom to customize a recipe however you would like. Sharing baked goods is a form of expression and emotion.
When there are times that no words can properly express what you are feeling, baked goods are always the answer. They are the perfect way to let someone know you are there for them and care. Plus, who doesn't want to have an avid baker as their friend?
Being an outlet of creation, baking makes me feel happier and helps me practice patience.Next time you need a distraction from life's daily stressors, give baking a try.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)
There were many challenges in this journey. The hardest part was using the oven.
Different ovens have different adjustments. Initially, I struggled with the instructions . The first batch always burnt out. After researching and watching videos on YouTube, I finally mastered the skill of using oven. I also asked my mom to help me with it.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)
Without the help of the online course and recipes from internet, nothing would have been possible. I’ve learnt a lot of tips and tricks from Yuppiechef.com. Moreover, the clear cut instructions made the outcome a success. The research part is what made the baking process smoother for me. So, the research part has really worked well for me.

5. What can be improved in this project?
I didn’t try vary of recipes in this project.
I should have tried recipes for pastries, biscuits. I was in my comfort zone and I didn’t try recipes that looked hard to me.
I wish i had more courage to try out the challenging recipes.

LANGUAGE BEYOND WORDS
Date: 16/08/2021 – 22/08/2021

WERE THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT FULFILLED?
I am very pleased to say that my objectives are fulfilled! I have now acquired a new skill and also gained the ability to understand basic Malaysian Sign Language (MSL).😊 In the span of 4 weeks, I have learned a total of 16 topics from the basics like alphabets and numbers to topics such as family, occupation, common medical symptoms and medical terminologies. Through this project I have developed a strong appreciation for MSL because it is an important tool which connects us and allows us to communicate and understand the deaf community.

WHAT I ENJOYED THE MOST ABOUT THE PROJECT
Looking back at my journey, I think the most enjoyable thing is the constant process of learning. Each day, I learned a new topic which I have planned beforehand in my schedule. As the elective posting is carried out during semester break, I was able to learn at my own pace with more flexibility. Therefore I can better grasp the things which I have learned and through this I have gained a lot of satisfaction. Besides that, the more I learn, the more motivated I am to explore the language.

WHAT I FOUND CHALLENGING ABOUT THIS PROJECT
The most challenging part of my project is memorizing the hand signs. In the beginning, it was easier to memorize because the topics were considerably easy. But as I approach the topics in the following weeks, it started to get harder to recall the hand signs of the previous topics which I have learned. There are several times where I had to stop mid-sentence to refer back to my BIM book while I am constructing a sentence and I felt very frustrated whenever it happened.

Besides that, I also find the tasks and quizzes in Open Learning MOOC to be challenging. Sometimes to answer the quizzes, I had to replay the video countless times to understand the information conveyed. This is because the hand signs were too fast for me to interpret. Therefore, in order to understand the conversations in the videos, I have to be very attentive and give my full concentration. I also have to be quick to recall, process information and patch together the meanings of the hand signs to understand each of the sentences.

WHAT HAS REALLY WORKED?
To solve the problem of memorizing the hand signs, I think the weekly self-review and recaps done with my friend has been very helpful. This is because it has helped me in better familiarising myself with the hand signs as well as building muscle memory. I realized that the more I practised, the more I am able to remember, and the quicker I am in recalling the hand signs of various topics. By doing reviews and recaps, I am also able to identify my weaknesses in certain topics. From there on, I can work on my weaknesses, set goals and improve myself. It is true that practise makes perfect!

WHAT CAN BE IMPROVED IN THIS PROJECT?
I think I should seek for lessons with a personal tutor if I were to continue learning Malaysian Sign Language (MSL). This is because as much as an online course can provide, I think that it is better to learn from a tutor because there will be more interaction and exchange of conversation. I can also voice out my questions or any confusions which I am facing when learning from a tutor. I believe that I will be more fluent in MSL if I have a native speaker to practice and interact with.

Date: 23/08/2021-29/08/2021 (week 4)

1. Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?
After a productive 4 weeks of learning sign language, I am delighted to announce that I have successfully completed the course on time. It has been an exciting journey for me and I am thankful that I can understand basic Malaysian Sign Language. Throughout these 4 weeks, I have learned 9 topics based on the learning materials provided on the Open Learning. However, I managed to learn other things from Youtube videos too. From 26 alphabets to occupations, I think I can converse in basic signed conversation. I may not be an expert, but I believe baby steps matter to make something works wonderfully.

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?
I enjoyed every single second of my journey. What I liked the most about this project is that I managed to complete one of my bucket lists which is to learn sign language. As this project is carried out during my semester break, I enjoyed learning in my own sweet time. I could take a longer time on topics that I found harder to master so that I could grasp a better picture of them. Besides, I could practice with my sister as she also joined me whenever I watch the videos too. As my elective project is a group project that consists of my two friends and me, we sometimes did online meetings to practice with each other. It makes us stay connected during this semester break. My friends and I had decided to come out with a Youtube channel to teach basic sign language to the public. I hope that a small effort from us could benefit the public.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)
The most challenging part of this project is to understand the videos for the quiz. As a beginner, it is kind of hard for me to understand the sign because the signed conversation was pretty fast for me so that I need to replay the videos quite several times. I missed a few signs sometimes so that I was unable to answer the quizzes correctly. Thankfully, I sought help from my friends and I managed to complete it even though it takes some time.

4. What has worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)
For me to memorize the signs well, I make sure that I do weekly revisions to make sure that all the signs that I learned did not fade away. Watching the same videos could be bored some so I watch other videos from Youtube to help me memorize the hand signs better. As we are facing a pandemic, sign language teachers published few videos to teach their students so I learned a lot of hand signs from their videos too.

5. What can be improved in this project?
It would be nicer if I could attend a physical class to learn this sign language. Person-to-person interactions would be more efficient to exchange ideas. The tutor could perhaps help me to improve my signing skills better if I could attend a physical class. Moreover, I only completed basic Malaysian Sign Language so I hope I could step into the next level to explore more about this language. Learning sign language is not a hustle as I expected it to be, I am satisfied with myself to be able to complete this elective posting

UVARRAJESWARI SELVARAJOO (A168263) - WEEK 4

MY OWN SECRET RECIPE
Date: 09/08/2021 – 15/08/2021

WERE THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT FULFILLED?

I am very happy that my objectives are fulfilled. I have now gained a new skill which is baking goods such as cakes and cookies. In the span of 4 weeks, I have learned to bake 10 different types of cakes and cookies and some of the ways in order to make the cake and cookies tastes better. Through this project, I have learned a lot new skills, tips and secrets in order to bake goods that I wished for in easier way and certainly with the help of yuppiechef from ude.my course platform. Besides that, with knowledge and skills that I have acquired from this course, I can apply them in baking cakes and cookies for my loved ones on the special occasion such birthdays, anniversaries and so on.

WHAT I ENJOYED THE MOST ABOUT THE PROJECT?

Looking back at my journey in this baking course, the part that that I have enjoyed the most is seeing the my baking goods that turn out to be tasty and enjoyed by my family members. The whole process of waiting the cakes or cookies to be made also enjoyable since I take my own sweet time in measuring the ingredients and mix them up step by step according to phase. I do not have to rush out and that’s make me fall in love with baking. Sometimes, baking makes me feel good too especially after my family members tasted the cake because the appreciates the efforts and that motivates me to do much more better for next baking session.

WHAT I FOUND CHALLENGING ABOUT THIS PROJECT ?

The most challenging part of my project is preparation for the baking process. As we are living in the COVID19 Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) MCO’s days, it was a struggle for me to get ingredients and baking stuffs since I am living literally in Perak-Selangor border. I cannot cross the border in order to get some of baking stuffs therefore, I have to wait till weekends to get my father’s help to get the stuffs for the baking. Besides that, for the first few days into baking, I had problem with preparation for baking in terms of measuring ingredients and the ingredients itself. I made mistakes on how to measure the flour and sugars in my first two recipe and my confusion regarding differences between self raising flour and all purpose flour. But now, I am clearer on the differences and measuring the ingredients accurately before starting the baking process.

WHAT HAS REALLY WORKED? (ANY PART OF THE PROJECT I FOUND HARD TO DO)

As I had stated before, I used to hate cooking and baking is far from my fetch. But after taking this online course from ude.my by yuppiechef, I have started to love baking and slowly acquired knowledge and skills in bakery. In past, I have burnt several cakes and cookies in the oven that made my mother angry those days. But after my online course, my mother let me use the oven and bake those awesome goods and she personally appreciate and valued my efforts too! Recently I have baked red velvet cake with cheese cream and it turn out great and I could not be more happier!

WHAT CAN BE IMPROVED IN THIS PROJECT?

I should have try on recipes other than cakes and cookies. For instances, I should make an attempt to bake pastries or doughnuts and many more. I scared to try to make these bakery goods since I am new beginner and want to go on easy first. I do not want to the bakery result in failure thus I go on baby steps in bakery. Therefore, I promised to myself that I will try more challenging baking stuffs once I am confident and skilled in my basic tips and techniques in the bakery course.

Date: 6/9/2021
1) Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?
Absolutely yes! Throughout this August, I have learned to sign 15 topics ranging from the alphabet to medical terminologies through Openlearning website, BIM pocketbook and Eddy app. From having zero knowledge about Malaysian Sign Language to being capable of signing simple sentences, I am delighted with my progress. Initially, I am pretty worried that I could not fulfill my learning objectives in just a month as there are many topics to cover. However, the satisfaction of mastering each topic motivates me to keep going. I am proud of myself for being able to complete the course and eventually reach my goal.

2) What have I enjoyed or liked the most about the project?
What I like most about this online course is flexibility. I can decide and allocate the best time for learning. For example, I concentrate better during the evening. Therefore, I will spend 2 hours from 5 pm to 7 pm to focus on the topics I plan. As I tailor the course to my capabilities, I realize that I manage to retain the knowledge well. Apart from that, learning at my own pace creates a stress-free learning environment. I can review the learning materials over and over whenever I need them without time pressure. By doing so, I manage to master the topic before moving forward.

3) What have I found challenging about this project?

The most challenging part is self-learning the topics that are not in Open Learning. It is because the BIM pocketbook that I bought does not come along with a CD. Sometimes the graphics are quite different to understand, so I need to refer to the Eddy app or Youtube videos to learn the hand movements precisely. This process takes some time because there are not many resources regarding BIM. Another thing that I find challenging is completing the quiz from topic seven onwards in Openlearning. The teachers sign their conversation very fast and the sentences got more complex comparing to the first few topics. I need to replay the videos a few times to understand the scenario fully.

4) What has really worked?
Spaced repetition by constantly reviewing the materials helps to reinforce what I have learned. For instance, I think the weekly self-review and zoom review session with my friend is effective in overcoming the forgetting curve. This method helps me to build muscle memory and allows us to learn new signs from each other. Constant practice also boosts my confidence to sign faster. After all, practice is the key to become proficient in a new skill.

5) What can be improved in this project?
It is a pity that due to the pandemic, there are no physical classes available. Personally, I prefer attending physical classes over online courses as I can have the teacher to address my doubt on the spot. Besides, physical classes also allow me to interact with others which makes learning more fun and interesting. Through interactive learning, I believe I can remember the signs better. Next, for me to truly master sign language, I need to put learning into practice. It would be nice to join a volunteering service that involves the deaf community, whereby I can apply the sign languages that I have learned through communication.

date: 6th September 2021

WERE THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT FULFILLED
absolutely yes! i must say with some ups and downs i was able to achieved all the objectives that i wanted. i managed to learn the basic skills in sign language, i know how to communicate with my friends using those basic sign language and actually imply them in medical field like in our third YouTube video. i was able to complete all the topics in the open learning and also was able to answer their quizzes correctly. some might take quite some time for me to answer but everything were done on time!

WHAT HAVE I ENJOYED OR LIKED THE MOST ABOUT THE PROJECT?
its the learning process itself. to learn from the most basic skills such as alphabets and numbers to more advance skill where i need to imply them in my conversation. how the approach was easy and very understandable. since it is an online course, i could actually enter the class anytime i want. since im at home, my time sometimes are pre occupied with house chores so whenever im free i could join the class. not to forget where i could do this project together with my group mates. i think our team work is a top notch hence we were able to complete this project on time.

WHAT HAVE I FOUND CHALLENGING ABOUT THIS PROJECT?
it is memorizing part. some hand gestures make sense but some they are not. there are plenty of words in this world. i was only able to memorize some of them. other than that, to add facial expression and body gesture while signing. to sign itself already hard, plus those? triple the hard! but it is one of the important thing in sign language.

WHAT HAS REALLY WORKED?
practicing. like what i have mentioned above, i have problem in memorizing words in sign language due all the hand gestures. my group mate really helps me. we would do video call to actually practice together. they would correct me if i did anything wrong and would cheer me up.

WHAT CAN BE IMPROVED IN THIS PROJECT?
to go for physical classes. to have 2 ways interaction with the tutor. because i do have plenty of questions to ask about the sign language itself. and internet did not satisfy my why. also to watch them sign like right in front of my eyes would make me understand and memorize better. other than that, i wish i could actually practice or try to talk with deaf and mute patient to improve my skills. overall, this project was perfect.

WEEK 4

1. Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?

Yes, I have accomplished my objective which was first,to be part of the frontliner in order to achieve herd immunity to combat Covid-19 . Eventhough I've only been volunteered for only 2 months, I believe I've developed a deeper appreciation and understanding for our frontliners, but knowing they risk their lives out there every day to keep us all safe is amazing.Second ,to get an experience and exposure about vaccination process. I get to learn as much as I can at different stations, so there are different roles at every checkpoint. Basically, we just have to communicate and educate people towards the whole process, as well as what to do pre- and post-vaccination.Lastly,to contribute time & energy to this programme rather than staying in the room during lockdown.

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?

Apart from getting free food everyday >.< , I really enjoy meeting new people & being able to socialize. Interacting with others boosts feelings of well-being and decreases feelings of depression.I am glad that all my time are well spent at the PPV.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)

Difficult patients are unavoidable and dealing with them often leads to increased stress levels & make us lose our patience. To communicate with difficult recipient who persist to get vaccinated eventhough we are closed already need an extra patience. Usually It is because they came late ( not following the scheduled appointment) , but insisted on getting vaccinated at that time . Responding appropriately to angry patients keeps stress away and prevents these types of situations from escalating into full-blown conflicts.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)

I think we all just want to do something and be of help with the current state of the country right now. Everyone just wants to contribute something that will help someone, somewhere.I believed I contributed well in making sure the process run smoothly . Apart from that, I am glad that I at least put a smile on a single person to get vaccinated.

5. What can be improved in this project?

From my side, I need to ask my collegue instead of making decision on my own .

From the higher up, I think it would be nice if they provide a guidelines on how each station work so that the new volunteers who just about to start get a brief idea of how the process run.

Week 4

1. Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?

Safe to say that I was able to fulfil my objective for these past few weeks. Finished all my lessons and test. I was able to read and understand mandarin much better than during the first week of starting this course. Quite happy and impress with my accomplishment because at first, I didn’t confident that I would be able to grasp this language.

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?

The journey of learning new language knowing that it will be useful in the future. Plus, it was really challenging for me to study a new and can consider a foreign language for me because lack of exposure with Mandarin. It really keeps me motivated to prove that I was up to the challenge.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (Any part of the project you found hard to do)

The hardest part of the course were the tests because the tests were fully written in mandarin and in that course, they didn’t really teach about reading mandarin much. It was quite confusing when they put it in sentences because everything looked familiar. It really took some time for me to recognize each one of the words.

4. What has really worked? (Any part in the project that you thought worked well)

What has really worked out was I able to finish the course and still enjoying my holiday. Other than that, I was able to recognize words in mandarin and pronounce them properly. Familiarize with the words also was the part that worked well because previously I rarely listen and read mandarin because I didn’t have many Chinese friends too. I have tried to watch some Chinese drama but still hard for me to understand it that fast.

5. What can be improved in this project?

More hands on, I guess. Learning mandarin by talking to other people might me more useful than learning online listening to recorded lessons which can’t really help me much especially when it comes to pronounce the word properly.
