A reason why Ha is twisting "inside out" is because she had to flee from her home. The papaya tree she had cared for for such a long time had to be cut down so that the Communists wouldn't have it, the majority of the photographs to remind her of her past had to be burned so her father wouldn't be put in danger, she could only take one personal belonging to the US when they were leaving, she had to leave behind her father without knowing if she would ever see him again, she had to learn a whole new language or have everything be translated to her by her brother and she only got small portions of food and water a day during the whole trip.

A reason why we see Ha twisting 'inside out' is because she has to start life kinda all over again. This can be identified in the poem titled "English Above All " shows how the focus for her family is learning a new language and mastering it. Since they are in a new land they would have to accommodate themselves to fit in and try to live their lives. Another example of this is in the poem "American Address" This poem shows that Ha's family is trying to find one solid place to stay.

Ha's life is twisting inside out because she is forced to leave her home in Saigon Vietnam to escape war and live in a place with a different language, America. For example in the poem, Last Respects, it explains former Saigon residents' emotions as the fact of Saigon being taken over sinks into everyone minds. Ha states the grief of many on the ship as they attempt or commit suicide due to the loss of their home. While it is not directly stated her side of how she feels, we can infer that she also may be experiencing grief based on how she mentions the ones who react and that the whole poem is to say the last goodbye to the only home she has ever known.

A reason why Ha is twisting 'inside out" is due to her leaving Vietnam. This can identified in the poem titled, "Last Respects." when Ha throws away a white bundle into the sea. Furthermore, the bundle contained her mouse bite doll and her brother's dead chick. These two items have been foreshadowed in several previous poems to be Ha's and as well as her brother's prized possession. This demonstrates that Ha is changing or developing as a character by doing something as drastic as throwing her doll.
