We have had some very knowledgable guest lecturers/speakers deliver taught sessions to us. The clinical psychology module is a good example of this. The guests were experts in their respective fields and shared very valuable and useful information with us in an engaging way.

Some members of the teaching team have been incredibly supportive; the vast majority have responded to emails and queries swiftly and with helpful, informative replies. Particular praise must be given to Gemma and Sarah Higgins for their efforts here.

The PRM module - specifically during the first teaching block - was very challenging and stressful. One or two sessions were not delivered in full and this had a detrimental impact on completing the assignment. Quantitative research can be challenging for some students and this was no exception, so to have the dataset released late and certain methods of analysis not fully taught was not helpful. All of the analysis methods taught were (I assume) new to the students and also much more complex than anything studied at undergrad - whilst I appreciate that at Masters level, we are expected to learn independently and be responsible for our own progress, I still think that more tuition time and support was needed. When support was sought on this module, the results were a little hit and miss and entirely dependent on whichever staff member responded. I understand that some students would not have experienced this level of difficulty but if only one student is struggling, that's already too many (especially given how much we are paying for our tuition).

There needs to be specific taught sessions and material directed at professional standards and behaviour. Perhaps this could be woven throughout the course with every module making links and references. Given how BPS, HCPC and BACP guidelines must be adhered to when training for and delivering roles in psychology, it should be emphasised that this begins at undergrad and is ongoing thereafter and applies to behaviours concerning students and staff as well as on campus and via social media. Additionally, the student code of conduct should be reiterated wherever relevant. Any deviations from these guidelines and CoCs should be addressed immediately in a consistent and transparent manner.

Positives of the course - Certain staff members have been incredible. Gemma Hurst has always been brilliant, email responses always detailed and helpful, teaching thorough, an encouraging and supportive attitude and approach that feels really genuine. Amy Burton is another staff member that for me personally has really boosted my experience of the course, her approach to teaching is dedicated and full of knowledge, and was incredibly supportive when I needed it both inside and outside of the class.

The clinical module ran by Nic was my favourite so far, his teaching was really good, the class was always ran well and he always answered any questions thoroughly, was super informative when it came to assessments and overall made Tuesday mornings enjoyable.

Negatives of the course - other staff members have been incredibly hard to reach over email, even in the working days. The PRM module as a whole was a let down for me, as someone who’s strengths were not in that area, the teaching wasn’t much of a confidence or knowledge boost. When receiving feedback from assessments certain markers seem far harsher than others, something that maybe needs looking at?

Overall course hasn’t always ran smoothly, for any Reasons including academic, and at many points where staff intervention could have been active it was nowhere to be seen.

I feel that my experience on the MSc has been a positive experience yet also challenging.

In particular I found the Clinical Skills module to be lacking context in some areas. Considering I felt like I was being taught a lot of what I already knew. Also the Research Methods module was a let down in teaching block 1, however this was made up for the excellent teaching in qualitative research during teaching block 2 and I now have a new found love for qualitative research.

One positive that really stood out to me is the amount of encouragement and support offered from the staff at the university. A special thanks to Lisa, Amy, Sarah D and Sarah H and Gemma. Who have all gone above and beyond to support me with everything that life has thrown at me during the MSc course this year, and also helping me to understand the assignments for each module and how to approach completing the assignments.

Some great knowledgeable lecturers and some really good subject areas across modules.

PRM first semester felt like a disaster. Mixed responses from multiple lecturers on what was to be included and not included in the report and how to go about things. I ended up having to result to using Google to search for how to do things as learning materials were not upto date.

Drop-ins were not managed effectively to enable students to work or ask for assistance, not enough staff in attendance to assist. Overall a very very poor experience. Alot of wasted time with meetings trying to resolve the learning environment.

2nd and 3rd term just seems to be full of drop in sessions rather than lecture content, time travelling has felt pointless.

Kind of feel like alot of money spent and not much education gained.

Overall, it’s been a good time! I’ve really enjoyed the lectures and felt supported throughout the course. It’s just a shame that some of the time got creatively used up by certain individuals, but hey, that’s the price of education, right? Despite that, I’ve genuinely had a good time and appreciated the effort put into making the learning experience enjoyable.

The PRM module was a little challenging due to those who insisted on bringing up BPS/HCPC/ACDC/PE guidelines. Clearly, we were all thrilled to lose so much valuable teaching time. On the bright side, the drop-in sessions were a lifesaver for those who managed to drop in... and, you know, actually stayed in. I do agree about the emails though.
