Drug Abuse Major Concern Among First Nations and Inuit

It says

This article highlights the drug and alcohol abuse in First Nations communities and how it compares to the rest of Canada. It talks about the lateral impacts these drugs have on family, social life, and mental health of others and the users. The article touches on the initiatives Canada is putting in place to help stop the speed and usage of drugs and the similar efforts by the native people.

I say

The article did not present the reasons why native communities have higher drug usage rates than the rest of Canada which I would be interested to find out. If there is specific reasons as to why the usage rate is higher is it because of the government? Can they do anything about it? Or does it not have anything to do with the communities they live in? I would also be interested to hear stories from first nations people who have encountered these issues and see what they think can be changed to help the cause.

And so

something needs to be done about this situation not only in the first nation communities but also all of Canada. There are initiatives that are ongoing but there needs to be more support to help end this issues once and for all. There also needs to be more research to explore the reasons why first nation communities are more prone to drug and alcohol abuse. The Canadian government needs to explore this issue to help support the First nation communities.

What

This article talks about Facebook’s “real name” policy that blocks users from using nicknames when registering. This presented issues when Native teens registered with their real names but Facebook picked them us as nicknames. For example some of the names where, Parmelee Kills the Enemy, Dana Lone Hill, Oglala Lakota Lance Brown Eyes who’s name was changed by Facebook to Lance Brown, and Shane Creepingbear all names that have native roots. They were taken down by Facebook mistaken for nicknames. There was much outrage from the community because Facebook was being racist toward them. Facebook responded by saying they were doing everything they could to fix it and still has more work to do.

So what

This presents many issues within the integration of the Native communities into city life. Their names alone may come across as nicknames and employers may not take them as serious because of this. Socially their peers may think there names are jokes casting them out socially. I don’t believe they should change their names and turn away from their heritage but I do believe something needs to be done about it. I don’t believe Facebook is to completely blame for this because it isn’t the easiest thing to distinguish from a native name and I nickname. It was unintended racism; I don’t believe Facebook had any intent of hurting the Native community.

Now what

I don’t think this is a centralized issue for Facebook or even an issue for them at all. I don’t think Facebook did anything intently wrong but I do think they owe the native community an apology for the inconvenience. I think this is a wide spread issue in our country. What we can do about it, i can’t tell you. I think its a hard situation to solve just because you can’t blame people for thinking their last names are nicknames and they shouldn’t be treated less due to there names.

A connection

The connection i can make to this article is Fahrenheit 451. In Fahrenheit 451 the government censored almost all media there population could view this harmed them to great extents. Facebook is censoring there Facebook accounts by declaring that some names are as they call them nicknames but in reality they are real names. They are not allowing the world to get used to Native last names and making the community even more of an outcast.

Indigenous Games

what
This article is about the indigenous games where first nations kids from all over Canada join as one and compete against each other to promote trial pride and togetherness. The article focuses on Kristy Innes and Kobe McKnight both on there respective gender u-19 basketball teams. The article highlights there willingness to work hard and meet there goals to play college basketball. The Indigenous Games take place in Toronto this upcoming summer and hope to have a huge turn out and great support from the city of Toronto.

so what

The indigenous games give the teens of the native community hope that there is more to strive for and gives them a goal to reach for. The 2 teens that were featured in this article both said that it was one of there goals since they were a kid to get to these games. When you grow up in a community where there isn't much hope these games give a great outlet to find hope. When teens have a goal to reach there whole way of life improves. They stay away from the bad things growing can give you and they strive to meet there goals. It gives a lost child a sense of meaning.

now what

When i was reading this article i could relate to it because i am attending the Maccabiah games in the summer. These games are held in Israel every 4 years where teams from all over the world compete in olympic type competitions. The games are for the Jewish community around the world. For me who isn't very involved in the jewish communities it will give me a chance to meet many people from around the world apart of the jewish communities and learn more about my religion. It will also give me a chance to compete for my country. both the Indigenous Games and the Maccabiah games are ways to bring communities together to promote pride, spirit, and international recognition.
