I think the book is really good so far. I like how the author is talking about his childhood. I also like how he took care of the dog by giving him a bath, massaging him, feeding him all the meat he had in his house and went to the store to get more. I also like the dog in the book. He is very loyal and doesn't give up. No matter how much the author would take care of the dog, he would still go on a journey to find his real owner without looking back. The reason why I like this book is because it has a lot of details and it takes place in the 1960s. I also like this book because the dog was kind to the man and thanked him when he left by wagging his tail. These are the reasons why I like this book so far and I hope I will enjoy the book until I'm done with it.

Dear Ayesha,
Wow, thank you for your addition of the setting and time period. It truly makes a difference with the language the author uses. I also appreciate your use of commas, it does not go unnoticed!
Love, Ms. Davis

I think the book is really good so far. It has really good detales i like how he's saying all these stuff about the owner and the dog he's like talking to the dog.if the dog was a person the dog left him because the dog wanted to get to his real owner.the dog does not get if the owner sold him or left him the dog is loyal even though the guy fed him and got food from the store so the dog can eat. But the dog really like the owner so he is going to go back for like 100 miles just to get home. I think the dog is loyal
And forgiveful and it takes place in 1960s and it has alot of dog fight i like action in the book the guy helped the dog so i think he's a good guy because he scared off the dogs to help one little poor.one when the dog left he felt said because they were getting along. But i think when we get more into the book more will be there because we read one chapter and we have all this intell. Bye 👋 😎

Dear Nick,
I like how you are excited to hear more about the man's story and his love of his dog. You are totally right about the dog's loyalty. This is a very important part of the book and we will see very soon how this loyalty takes place later on in the story. I would like you to go back into this response and edit for run on sentences. Not a lot of periods up there ^^^^.
   Love, Ms. Davis

I Think the book is really good.Because he is taking care of the dog and i think that is so sweet.I also love the fact that the guy we don't know his name yet.But he is letting the dog go back in to the world.Because the dog wants to find his owner. He found the hunting dog he was in a pack of fighting dogs. And the dog was bleeding out of his ear was spilt in to two pieces. The guy took the dog to his house and the dog made the guy remember when he had two dogs. The guy took care of the dog by giving him a bath and giving him food an some warm milk the guy even had to go to the store to buy more food for the dog and after that the dog wanted to go home to see his owners if he has owners. Then he said your always welcome to come back.I love how he loves the dog and he is being very loyal to the dog and the dog is being very loyal to the guy too.Now we know the guys name his name is Billy. If i was a dog I would want an owner like Billy. If I could rate this book out of 1-10 I would rate this book a 9 out of 1

Dear Madison,
Yes! This story is too sweet and it makes me think of my own dog. I appreciate your periods and capital letters here, be careful of lowercase i's! In my opinion it's a good book because it adds a lot of detail of a guy saving a dog then showing us his past of wanting to get a dog and causing the farm a huge meltdown with the chickens jumping and there hog running in circles and there cow going crazy it's really a creative story more impressive it's a true story! A nonfictional story that's really creative and a worth reading book that is very very eye catching I really think you should read that book.

Richard,
Thanks for your response.

Where The Red Fern grows is a great book for us fifth graders to read. The story can get you lost in the book and forget about the problems you have and relax. The book gets really good once you know that it is going to be a dog story. I really like the way that the author brought the reader in by reminding him of his past and his dog when ever he was younger. Billy has a great personality and is caring for the poor, beat up dog. The author is good about making Billy really know how the dog feels and setting him free. I also really like how Billy will get a dog no matter how much to takes. I also agree with Angelica. If the ad for the dogs were on a magizine two years ago, then will it still be for sale? I can't wait to find out if Billy really does get the dog!!

Dear Mena,
YES! I totally am vibing with you. I really enjoyed the foreshadowing in the first chapter that set up the ultimate flashback. I love Billy's character and the determination he has in order to get his puppies! Have you ever saved up for something you really wanted like him? I am personally saving up for a new car and his work ethic inspires me.
Love, Ms. Davis

~Where The Red Fern Grows~ I honestly think its very good. I love reading new books expecially if its a classic. This book is well written. When reading I want to keep reading until I read the whole book. But I have to stop at one point. I love how Billy is a hard worker and doesn't cry and scream then stops and gives up hope and when his hard work gives him a reward and he doesn't spend it on something else and spends it on the thing he always wanted. Although I have Questions

If the magazine was written two years ago, will the hounds still be one sale?

~only question right now :3~

I think that he will get his hounds soon and take good care of them. He's also a sharing person, he gave his candy to all three of his sisters and didn't just keep it to himself like how i would have done. I like how he doesn't give up and keeps goingand doesn't stop until he reaches his destination.

GrEaT bOoK :D

Angelica,
Wow, you put me into thought here. I love how you incorporated theme into the characters...I didn't think about this until now. Characters can definitely influence theme and plot within the story. Billy's theme of hard work and determination may play more in the future. He really is a great kid.
Yes, I agree. I was worried about that myself with the amount of time that went by while saving up for his hounds. We will have to wait and see!
Love, Ms. Davis

I also think that it's a good book because it shows us his childhood and it shows how he was determined to get what he wants especially if he wants dogs because almost everyone likes dogs and in the book it said that every boy in the country has a hound dog except him .It is a really interesting book and you can get lost in it if you relax and read it .I have questions too. , like Mena and Angelica.
1. If he spent two years working for the money and wanted the dog the year before , wouldn't the dog be sold already.
  ONE MAIN QUESTION .
Would he get the dog?😏🤷‍♀️

Olamide,
These are really great questions and I couldn't help thinking them myself.

I like Where The Red Fern Grows because it is about a boy named Billy and he asked his mom and dad if he can have two hound dogs and there parents said no because they are poor and they can't afford it.So everyday Billy worked with his dad and picked out blueberries and he sold worms to the fishermen. And one day he made $50 so he went to his grandpas store and told him to order the dogs and his grandpa asked him how long have you been saving the money and Billy said 2 years and his grandpa shouted out TWO YEARS and his grandpa gave him a sack of candy and he went home to eat it.Billy was waiting weeks to get the form and he finally got it.He went to the place where the dogs where and he found a mirror and it was his first time seeing his reflection.Billy kept making silly 😜 faces and then there were two women and they were laughing at him and then he just walked on.when he walked on he saw a school and he didn't know what it was.And he saw kids about his age and there where kids getting on the slid and Billy didn't know what it was and this kid walked up to him and asked do you go to school here and he said no and the kid said do you go to Jefferson and Billy said no and the kid said where do you go to school at and Billy said at home and the kid said '' you go to school at home?''And Billy said yes and then the kid went to the other kids and the started saying hillbilly hillbilly and when the bell rang all of the kids were in a straight line and they went back inside the school and when Billy was all alone he wanted to go down the slid.He noticed that the the line where the boys jumped is still there. So he went up the ladder. The higher he got the more scary it was. When Billy finished climbing he slipped and went down the slid.He tried to grab something but there was nothing to grab when he was at the end of the slid he went flying in the air and went farther than the line. There was a women laughing at him in a rocking chair and then the lady said how did you like it but billy ignored her and kept on walking. On a scale form one to ten i would chose a ten because it has so many details and it has action to the story and i like that.If i could read a book forever i would read this one.

At first I thought that the Red Fern would be boring, but it turned out to be very intriguing. The story is about a little boy from a not-so-rich family named Billy. He desperately wants two hounds. Every kid on his block has a cute hound pup. Because he so desperately wants a dog, he doesn't sleep, eat, or take care of himself. This becomes so bad that you could even call it a dog-wanting disease. This is the part of the book that really got me caught up in the story. This caught my interest because since his family is poor, they don't have enough money to get him one, never the less, two rare hounds.

Where The Red Fern Grows is an amazing book that i would recommend reading. All the things that happen in this book are very cool. It makes me feel sad that Billy's family is poor. Seeing Billy suffering from the dog wanting disease makes me heartbroken. I was once infected with the disease Billy has. But I got my two Pitbulls and my problem was solved. I am so excited to see what happens in the next chapter. I hope Billy can get his 2 dogs from the depot. He is a very brave person to go to Kentucky alone, while being barefoot! Billy is one of the most caring people I ever heard of. Having a person that would go alone just to get 2 dogs is. Reading this book has taught me so much. If I could rate Where The Red Fern Grows, I would rate 5 stars 100%. Billy is a very hardworking kid, and I can't wait for Billy to get his dogs. Just like me, I saved up for something I really wanted. The best part in the book I've read so far is Billy taking the journey all the way to Kentucky. This is a book about a little boy wanting 2 hounds, and it is amazing,it's full of adventure and sadness. I think the theme of the book is don't give up no matter what. I feel awful since Billy has no shoes, so it must be pretty hard picking berries without getting scratched. It must have been really hard to live back then. I hope Billy will get the dogs and have a safe journey home. But getting 50$ is hard work, even for an adult. If i had to read one book forever, it would be Where The Red Grows. This book makes me feel like the character is me. This book takes me to an new place every time i read it. Billy is also very kind, so he deserves a dog. Giving candy to his sister is just an amazing act of kindness. But it seems like Billy might have a special connection with dogs that he was born with. But when Billy was looking around the place and saw the officer, he got really scared and thought he was going to die. But he didn't die, the officer just walked right past him. But when the kids called him hillbilly, i wondered what it meant. And when Billy went flying through the air, he got the wind knocked out of him. That woman laughing was just not being nice to Billy. This is a great book that i would want everyone in the school to read, sadness, happiness, and adventure all happens in this one book,

I really like Were The Red Fern Grows.I like how Billy wants Coon Hounds. My Nana has a coon hound and they are very energetic.I also really like coon hounds, so we have something in common.I also like how when Billy sees the school kids he thinks it is a rich mans house and he is throwing a party for his children. He sees the slide and is very interested at what it is. He stands there and watches some kids play on it. They are trying to jump further than the last kid. One kid sees him and starts to talk to him about were he goes to school, who teaches him, and where he lives. Billy tells him that he lives in the hills and the boy calls him a HillBilly. He runs to go tell the group of boys that were playing on the slide and they come over yelling HillBilly. The bell rings and the boys run of to go back into the school.Billy looks around to see if anyone was looking then goes to try the slide. He climbed up the slide and slips! He slides down the slide and flies through the air and lands nocking the air out of him.I found this part a little funny. I also like how he thinks of his family when he is in the store with the overalls, thread, and fabric. I love this book and think that just about everyone should read it.

I think where the red fern grows is a totally awesome book, at least i think so. Billy is so energetic and thoughtful he cares for the dogs so much and he doesn't give up on them. One thing i liked about this book is billy travels and realizes there is so much to learn where he is and he never is complaining about what he has to eat or how much money he has he doesn't really care if he has no money he only cares about getting the dogs home safe. My mom told me it's a really good book. I think so because it's so adventurous and inspiringly great, but sad. Also the sadness makes you feel more emotions than you should. Sad, happy, bravery, and the hardships he faces, they just make you feel bad for him. And his bravery is fantastic. I would give this book a 5 STAR RATING! This book is now my favorite book in the world but its also sad i can't wait until we finish this book because I am going to read it again so that proves I love this book so much I would read it a thousand times if I could have enough time in my life. This is a great book so i would recommend you to read it a lot of times. So READ IT IT"S GREAT PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOT READ IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
