In the year 1956 this colony gained its independence and became a nation state whose government was primarily Muslim. Like in many other African nations who were colonies when the border divisions were made people from different religions and ethnic groups were put together under a single flag. This was the case when the north of Sudan which was primarily Muslim and the south of Sudan which mostly had people who followed indigenous African faiths and Christians were put together into this new country where the Muslims had greater power in the government. The Europeans retained their colonies based on who had the military power to control and keep them, so they did not care about any divisions that were set by the Africans; they wanted to get the most they could before the other countries did. This is what caused so much trouble and negative long term effects for the African nations of today. Sudan is a perfect example, after they left the colony and set up a mismanaged government for them they disregarded factors like the cultures of the people who lived there.
