Charlie Gordan is a 37 year old man who is intellectually disabled living in New York in 1965. He struggles with his job and learning simple things until two doctors deside to preform a simple operation on him to make him more intelligent. After the operation his intelligence gradually improves until he is much smarter than the doctors. He struggles with not being understood because other people aren't as smart as him. He realizes that his "friends" and co-workers had been making fun of him because of his lower intellect, and he finds himself doing the same. A rat with the same operation as him starts having symptoms of intelligence loss and Charlie dedicates the rest of his time with increased intelligence to research his problem. The story ends with him having the same symptoms as the rat and desiding to move away from new York :C
