I'll give out the pieces."). -Continues to establish and maintain friendships with other children. Seeks others' acceptance and friendship (example: "We're buddies, right?").
-May join a group to exclude others.Uses a wider array of words or actions to demonstrate awareness, understanding, and concern for what others are feeling (example: goes over to a child whose block building has fallen down and says, "Don't worry, Manuel. I'll help you build it up again."). -Uses a broader repertoire of strategies, including negotiation and compromise, to resolve conflicts before seeking adult help (examples:"I have a great idea, Henry! Vygotsky states: "Every function in the child's cultural development appears twice: first, on the social level, and later, on the individual level; first, between people (interpsychological) and then inside the child (intrapsychological). This applies equally to voluntary attention, to logical memory, and to the formation of concepts. All the higher functions originate as actual relationships between individuals."

What's a five year-olds brain up to?

According to Jean Piaget's theory of Cognitive development, five year olds are in the pre-occupational stage of cognition. In this stage, children have already grasped the concept of object permanence and are beginning to think symbolically. An example of a child thinking symbolically is when a child picks up a pen and says that it is a magic wand. They will also engage in dramatic and constructive play regularly (for example playing dress up and building with legos)At this point in a child's life they will start to want to make people happy, though they still do think egocentrically, and cannot quite think logically.

Typically developing five year-olds also have the mental capacity to:

Count to 10

Draw a picture of a person with at least six body parts

Print some letters and numbers

Recognize at least five colors

Draw at least five shapes

Know how money is used

According to the CDC, if a five year-old exhibits any of the following behaviors, parents may want to consult their child's physician:

Extreme behavior

Does not display multiple emotions

Cannot do basic self-help skills (brushing teeth, getting undresses by themselves, washing their hands by themselves, ect. )

Gets distracted easily or cannot pay attention to one task for more than five minutes

During this age Erik Erikson believes children are at the end of their Initiative vs Guilt stage. During this stage, children begin to assert their power and control over the world and ask the major question: "Am I good or bad?”. They do this through play and other social interaction. During this stage it is important to allow exploration and guide children toward appropriate choices. If caregivers are to discouraging, children may feel ashamed and become very dependent on others out of fear .
