There is an underlying meaning that everyone has a unique culture and they need a short cut to be able to understand who someone else is by knowing what kind of culture they come from. This means Malaka is thinking of the "what are you ?" question as a way to give a quick summary of your identity, and that also contributes to her confusion when she doesn't have a quick summary that explains her own complex racial identity.

This matters because it shows that Malaka learns about this question as a way to share a part of who you are, and that informs her opinion about it. She doesn't think she has a good enough answer to this question, so she can struggle to answer it, but she enjoys asking it to other people in order to learn about their cool diverse backgrounds.
