In the 1920's it was discovered that a harmless bacteria strain became deadly when it was mixed with dead virulent bacteria.

It was apparent that some kind of "transformation" was taking place
to have the dead bacteria make the harmless bacteria deadly

After many tests of slowly eliminating all possible substances that might make the harmless bacteria deadly (coat, protein,RNA, DNA) it was concluded that DNA was the factor. DNA is what made the genes deadly.

When the virulent bacteria was killed, and combined with the nonvirulent the combined bacteria was deadly again. it wasn't till DNA was removed from the heat killed bacteria, that that it didn't become deadly.
